Happy Solstice Day!

As I look East out my computer window, I am watching the sun come up in the southernmost point on the horizon. From here on out (to June 21), good ol' sol will march north (left) a little more each day. I love observing the sunrise.

Of course, it will take a couple of weeks to notice any difference in it's position at sunrise. Solstice literally means "sun stands still". Like a yoyo at the bottom of its fall, it takes awhile before the sun appears to move back north.

Actually, it's the earth's revolution (not "rotation" which some TV person mistakenly said) and it's 23.5 degree axis tilt that makes all this solstice/equinox thing happen.
Elementary, my dear Watson. Yet, the common man has little understanding of the causes, let alone a comprehension of the science (astronomy) involved.

Rachel Maddow did a miserable job last night in trying to explain how the whole solstice thing works. This coming from a former 7th grade science teacher. I failed, too, in trying to explain and demonstrate the "magic" of seasons. For 32 years I tried new techniques to get the lesson across to blank stares (and minds?) of our youth. I often wonder how many kids actually got it. Did you?

Anyway, today is MY holiday, MY Christmas, if you will. I am currently celebrating as I watch the sun rise, listening to inspirational classical music, drinking my coffee (and typing this out). After all, Christmas was stolen from the solstice celebrations of the ancients. We know Jesus wasn't born on December 25. That's all manufactured to coincide with the real reason for the season.

I don't mind sharing my special day. We're all in it together, whether we like (or understand) it or not. Winter, here we come! Enjoy and HAPPY SOLSTICE everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Happy Solstice (late, but I did note the day!).
I did a course in Astrology & Astrophysics, holy crow it was difficult to understand! But I sure understand what's happening "out there" better than I did before the course.

So you taught 7th grade science -- Earth/Space science. That was actually my favorite year. Hey, but watch how you talk about Rachel!! Maybe she flubbed on this item, but I think she's stunningly good on the political & analytical subjects.

But I was never a science geek (think Big Bang Theory). Sometimes I almost wish I could teach again. I'm always coming up with new ideas and approaches to certain subjects. And yes, I think the world of Rachel!

Just got back from a Happy Solstice cocktail party, which started at sunset (5:07 p.m.). Salud!

Happy Solstice! In only 32 days the sun will set at 5pm here (as opposed to 4:27 today)!

My old (1999 model Garmin 12XL) provides sunrise/sunset data down to the second. The how is easy.. the why? I donno... I like to collect data. I also keep track of millage on the truck and a few other tings like that.

I'm impressed you would know that! Question: How do you know that?
reply by solitaire on Dec 23, 2011 5:31 AM ()
And a Happy Soltice to you, too. In a week we will notice the change in the afternoon.

It's like watching fingernails grow--slow, but sure. I'll keep marking the sunrise by the trees on the horizon.

I am excited for the light to last longer... the darkness depresses me!
comment by kristilyn3 on Dec 22, 2011 9:17 AM ()
I don't see you as being depressed. But I know what you mean. Nothing like light, esp. sunlight, that boosts the ol' spirit.

yes,I read most of this and very well aware the date.Enjoy your day there.
Today the temp is in the fifties and this will all change for the weekend.
I for one will be glad when all of this is over. That and the first in the nation primary and debate.
But that is show business. Not that I will vote for him,but loved to see Ron Paul walk all over the leading contender.

Ron Paul, like all the others, has a screw loose. I'll stick with my president.

Agnostic as I am, I wish the faithful would go back to the roots of their beliefs and act that way. Also, so tired of the frenzied commercialism. Your celebration of the Solstice is a nice variation. Be well.

Besides, I beat the rush! Now, I can just sit back and enjoy the frenzy of others. And I don't have to buy any presents.

According to the date of the Caesar Augustus Roman census, the date of Jesus' birth was sometime in April.

I just knew it wasn't on Dec. 25.
