Here's the newspaper headlines that hit me in the face the other morning:
"State finds $320M in unaccounted revenue" (Indiana)
My first reaction was, "that's nice". The article elaborated on the unexpected windfall, saying that an auditor for the state's dept. of revenue discovered the "programming error".
Then I read on, realizing, in horror, that $300 million was the shortfall in in education funds that were stripped from our schools, frocing reduction-in-force layoffs, bond referendums and serious looks at the ways schools were using our tax money. Eventually, these problems were used as part of the justification for the controversial voucher bill and restrictions on teachers union's ability to negotiate for pay and benefits. (I'm a former teacher.)
I just say that I find it disturbing the timing and amount of money "discovered" coincides with the passage of those highly contested bills, by a governor (Mitch Daniels) who strongly favored that legislation. State Democrats protested by leaving the state en mass last Spring.
So what's going to happen to that "extra" 320 million dollars?
Supposedly, the average taxpayer will receive a $50 refund! Big whoop! I would just as soon stick it up my governor's smiling face--the one below his lower back.
