My Great (Wink) State

Here's the newspaper headlines that hit me in the face the other morning:
"State finds $320M in unaccounted revenue" (Indiana)

My first reaction was, "that's nice". The article elaborated on the unexpected windfall, saying that an auditor for the state's dept. of revenue discovered the "programming error".

Then I read on, realizing, in horror, that $300 million was the shortfall in in education funds that were stripped from our schools, frocing reduction-in-force layoffs, bond referendums and serious looks at the ways schools were using our tax money. Eventually, these problems were used as part of the justification for the controversial voucher bill and restrictions on teachers union's ability to negotiate for pay and benefits. (I'm a former teacher.)

I just say that I find it disturbing the timing and amount of money "discovered" coincides with the passage of those highly contested bills, by a governor (Mitch Daniels) who strongly favored that legislation. State Democrats protested by leaving the state en mass last Spring.

So what's going to happen to that "extra" 320 million dollars?
Supposedly, the average taxpayer will receive a $50 refund! Big whoop! I would just as soon stick it up my governor's smiling face--the one below his lower back.

Why not put the money back into the school systems- or health care, or to shore up the police and fire departments? Duh!

I really hate refunds like that because it's never enough money per taxpayer to make a difference in their life, and so much money is expended in sending them out. It sounds like a cheap trick to make the current state government look good to shallow non-thinking taxpayers. And it does sound like the books could have been cooked to guide events in that certain direction.

Unfortunately, most citizens are taking the news as "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth." Accept the state's excuse--no questions asked.

The Republican governors across the country are all doing fancy things with their budgets and none of them are any good for their states. Our governor has a low approval rating and is trying to recapture his reputation because he finally realized he is in deep doodoo.

Just think of all those Republican governors that are "ruining" their states--Ariz., Wis., Indiana, Fl., Mich., Ohio, etc. etc.

I bet your suspicion on the missing money and the legislation is spot on. I hate those vouchers, too -- they rob public education.

We're getting a lot of ideas about what to do with the money. I have none, because nobody would listen to me anyway.

I don't know how we can expect to have good schools when teacher salaries
are so low. I get mad every time I hear about what athletes and actors are
paid.

And I refuse to give them my attention. Sports figures, politicians, entertainment people are all ignored by me.

Nothing compared to what's happening in Florida--we have more politicians in or going to jail than any other State---seriously!!!

Hey, who you mean? I haven't heard of any -- and most notably, as I said in a recent post, Rick Scott richly deserves to be in prison.

I'm reading a good book with a solution to bad politicians. Review upcoming.

Hard to believe that FL has more crooked politicians than IL, but it does. How do we (the people) stop all the corruption? Is it impossible?
