Dog Bite!

Not again!! I got up at sunrise (beautiful, by the way), to beat the heat and go jogging. I took a slightly different route, running the highway with no traffic at 6:30 AM.

A dog ran out "at me". I froze. He stopped, smelled my friendly, offered hand, then he bit it! Son of a bitch.

I went up to the house, but got no response. Either they were sleeping soundly, or gone. I wrapped my bleeding hand in my handkerchief, and ran back home (3 miles away).

I know the dog's owners, so I tried to call them. Nothing. I called their neighbors who informed me they were on vacation. Great. So I called the sheriff's office to report a dog bite. They were to call "animal control" and check on any records of dog shots.

In the meantime, what am I to do? Go to "emergency"? Wait? I peroxided and bandaged myself up (not easy one handed), and took some pain killers.

I think I'll survive, but it sure is aggravating. This makes it dog bite #5 in my running career.

My 2 California children and Honduran grandchildren are spending the night and tomorrow with me. Yeah. May have to turn on the AC to cool down the upstairs where they'll sleep.
I have much more to report (poison ivy, blackberries, family supper, etc.) but these are the highlights of "life with Randy". Stay cool.

Roosevelt quoted the West African proverb, "Speak softly and carry a big stick." I love Google.
How's the hand feeling now?

Thanks to my last dog bite, 3 yrs ago, I've had my tetanus shots. Just penicillin for insurance.

Be carefull with the bite, I think you might need a (what we call) tetanus-injection...

Walk softly and carry a big stick.

So you're quoting one of our presidents! Good motto, but impractical here.

You should go to an ER just to get it checked out. So sorry.

Thanks. See next post.

Pepper spray. Concealed weapon permit and a .44 Magnum? If a dog attacks you and you have a CWP you are allowed to defend yourself. A sharpened 9 iron would be my defensive weapon of choice. Damn!

I do have, and could carry, a "billy-club". I just like to run unencumbered. You and Martin need to bury the hatchet. I take his comments with a grain of salt.

Your comment to Randy isn't inane? Are you kidding jondude?

YOU REALLY DIDN'T KNOW MY COMMENT WAS MEANT AS A JOKE? Are you serious? You have to be kidding unless your comment, as insulting as it is, is meant as a joke!

OOO and you might want to look into direct stop/spray shield...

Thanks--may have to check up on that.

Yikes! That is unfortunate. I wonder why the dog is running loose if the owners are on vacation? Makes little sense....
comment by kristilyn3 on July 17, 2011 3:16 PM ()
Out in rural Indiana, "running loose" is the norm. No town ordinances, evidently, to prevent this type of thing. Dogs and guns (and the Bible).

Very traumatic. What was that dog doing running loose outside a fence while the owners were on vacation? Can you start carrying pepper spray?
comment by troutbend on July 17, 2011 3:03 PM ()
Yep, running loose. "Protecting the house". I've always poo-pooed carrying anything, but I'm reconsidering.

Sorry this happened. Fredo seems to have the right take on it. Next time you encounter a strange dog, just slow to a walk and keep going.
comment by tealstar on July 17, 2011 9:15 AM ()
Over the years, I have tried everything--froze, walked on, ran faster. I don't think there's a "right" way. And I like dogs.

If he had been rabid it probably would have been evident. Dogs just naturally pursue whatever is running. Some people prefer dogs that bite
but I am content with Rex who is a real cowardly lion.
comment by elderjane on July 17, 2011 9:04 AM ()
And, of course, I got the same old story (from the owner's mother): "He's never done that before!" There's always a first time, lady.

Don't you get the message? STOP RUNNING!!! You are annoying the dogs, the sheriff's office, the ER and me with that nonsense--besides you are leaving your dna all over the ground, not to mention your blood might have made the dog sick!
comment by greatmartin on July 17, 2011 9:02 AM ()
I hope you're just kidding around.

Martin, are you kidding? Why don't you get off your f++king high horse and stop leaving such inane and egotistic comments? Nobody here is 'perfect,' especially you. (There is no emoticon for a finger sign. Sorry!)
reply by jondude on July 17, 2011 3:33 PM ()
The first mistake that you made that you offered your hand. This is a no no.
I was thought not to do this.Which make a lot of sense.
If you do offered your hand,do with a fist like and this way here you can avoid a bite that is not as bad as your hand.Sorry,to hear this.
Lets hope that he did get all of its shots.
comment by fredo on July 17, 2011 8:06 AM ()
I've learned my lesson, although I think once a dog decides to bite, it doesn't matter what you do. Thanks for the tip.
