Books and Boob-tube

After a hard day of play (golf) and work, I usually take a walk and play the piano for 30' after supper, then plop down in my recliner (which needs replacing), turn on the boob-tube and open up a book.

It's a habit to turn on the TV. Nothing's on, especially since I downgraded my DISH package to virtually zilch. I do receive MSNBC (and not FOX), but I've pretty much quit watching it. I don't know about you, but I'm already sick and tired of hearing about the Republicans. Heck, I feel the same way about the Democrats. Both the "bashing" and whole political circus is revolting. So other than Big Bang Theory and Chopped, there is little for me to enjoy. No sports (except weekend football).

So, I read. Even that is becoming more difficult. My eyesight is getting poorer--more strain, giving me headaches, and fluorescent lighting just isn't bright enough.

I did enjoy reading a biography about Django Reinhardt. He was an amazing guitarist (1910-1953), born a gypsy in France. A fire damaged his fretting fingers at age 18 preventing use of two of them. Still, he played on, reinventing himself. With violinist Stephan Grapelli, their "Hot Five" became a huge attraction. I actually have a record album of them playing swinging jazz. Great stuff!
Django was illiterate, obstinate, and always a gypsy. But man, could he play. He influenced many guitarists to this day.

I'm now reading Nelson Mandela. Interesting man.

Well, I'm off to the woods to cut more firewood. This might be the final time for 2011. I'll have two years worth.
Enjoy your weekend, everybody.

Wow. I remember reading this- and I left no comment? How did that happen? I enjoy movies and just read/reviewed a book by another self-published author called "Zero Point". It went a long way to explaining many- but not all of our blunders in the mid-East.

I'm sure that was an eye-opening book--probably aggravating and depressing, too! I think I'll pass. I have a new author for you to enjoy: Louise Erdrich.

Get checked for cataracts. There is no need to wait and it brightens up
your whole world. am going to read Fredo's book about T. Williams. I
love his nitty gritty plays.

I assume that's Tennessee, not Ted, Williams!

Two years worth of firewood? Nice! Can you sell it and buy a new recliner?
comment by kristilyn3 on Sept 18, 2011 4:14 PM ()
No, but I'm thinking about selling a few old baseball cards!

I am turning off the TV more and more and have rediscovered my radio and my CD collection and the joy of classical music and jazz in the background while I'm going about my day. I have to titrate my doses of politics on TV since it's so distressing, but I keep tuned in enough to stay ticked off with the GOP.

And I say "amen" to that!

Fredo, the "Ramblin' Man"!! Love it! I may complain a little, but for the most part, life is good. I strive for perfection. It ain't gonna happen. I was at the optometrist last January and got fitted with new glasses. But I never have liked the results. I should return before next Jan. Worsening cataracts, I'm afraid. Take care.

I've been enjoying audio books that I download from the Las Vegas library to my iPod. It is my new background noise as I go about my daily business. Today I'm moving some gravel with the wheelbarrow and listening to 'This Sceptered Isle' by Christopher Lee.

You can download Vegas library books in Colorado? Wow! I thought for a second you were back in LV. The wheel barrow news told me not. I still live in the dark ages--but you know that.

As we use to use the radio I now use the TV--as background noise!

I have to mute the TV sound in order to concentrate on what i'm reading. It's like having "company" or a partner in the room. I can't even have the radio going because I start listening to the music. One track mind!

I have actually started to enjoy Big Bang Theory. A friend of mine lent me season one for the kids to watch while I was recovering from a nasty infection (you don't want details...believe me). Once I allowed myself to giggle a bit at Sheldon it was pretty amusing. I found so many similarities, it was like laughing about my own life on some days.

Do you need new glasses?

I enjoy all the characters on BBT. They are hilarious. New season starts this week (Th.)! I've been thinking about returning to the optometrist. It's been 8 months. Maybe I'm reading TOO much! Glad you stopped by.

Played a course I've never walked before... Nature Trails, near Bettsville OH, yesterday. Beautifully carved out of a mature forest and very well manicured. I was impressed, but not with my scorecard.

I stuck to my "new" course all summer. A season pass cost me only $275 (walking)! After 75 plays so far, that's pretty cheap entertainment (plus gas costs @ $2.50 per round trip). I'm hitting the ball great, but my putting is atrocious. It's all mental.
