Labor Day Weekend: the mark of the end of "summer"--at least in the Midwest. And a hot end it is!
It was 99 the past two days. In a greenhouse, it must have been over 120. That's where I spent 2 hours picking strawberries for my "kids" Thurs. I also picked green beans in the heat of the afternoon. With my allergies, it was a miserable day. But I got to play with my grandson, so it was worth it.
I've already beat the heat today by getting my jog in early. It was rather pleasant. The soybean and corn fields are showing signs of "browning", marking the end of the growing season. It won't be long before the skies are hazy with harvest dust.
I have all of my winter's firewood cut, split, and stacked. And about half of next year's wood is drying out. As long as I'm able, I'll keep heating my house with my wood furnace.
I visited my father and sister yesterday after golf. Dad still treats me like his "little boy", always giving me advice. This time it's about "reigning in" my son-in-law (Nate) with all his big plans on truck farming--his "over extension". Dad's right, but I get tired of hearing it over and over. And his house must be over 95 degrees--refuses to turn on the AC. And you all accuse me of being crazy (although the apple falls not far from the tree!)!
My plans for the day include "doing up" tomatoes, digging potatoes, weeding, maybe spitting some wood, and definitely making a blackberry peach pie! No heat is going to stop me!
Enjoy your holiday weekend.
