Responsibility

I know it can suck sometimes, but...

I recently had a friend email me wondering if I could find a home for her cat. As if me liking animals means I have connections to any and all people who would want a cat right now. I asked her why she was thinking about getting rid of Layla... she told me she was moving and couldn't take the cat with her. I really couldn't believe this was coming from her. What??? Move to a place that takes cats, duh. I found a place for a large dog which was HARD but hello, I never for a second thought about giving up my Kraymer.

I just went down the hall at work and saw a sign with 2 cute dogs on it. The sign says the two sweet dogs need to find a home because the owner is moving and can't take the dogs with em.

This angers me to NO END. WHY GET AN ANIMAL if you aren't WILLING to take care of it for it's entire existence? Gawd that really burns me. It REALLY angers me.

Stupid, selfish, careless humans.

And people wonder why I like animals better most days.

You are so right. People are selfish and I most always like animals better.

There are very, very few times I understand giving up a pet when moving - losing your home to foreclosure is one of them. Unfortunately, too many people are losing their homes now and that means many animals are losing theirs too. I wish I could give some of irresponsible folks a piece of my mind, but I'm just no good at confrontations. At least the people are trying to find new homes for the pets and not just dropping them off someplace or taking them to a shelter.

We will see more of it as the economy gets worse, and people are more strapped for money. Animals are an expensive luxury when the economy is falling apart. People still love their pets, but can't afford to feed them, buy their medical care, even bury them when they die.

In places where landlords are paying for oil to heat their rental units, it is costing more than ever expected. Even the wealthy are cutting corners. Not the super-rich. they never cut corners, they consider it "an obligation to the little people to keep them working."

When you are a double income household, and then suddenly a single income household and your kids come home, bringing their kids for you to babysit, there's a lot more pasta than there used to be on the menu. Poor old FDR died waiting for the depression to turn around. Gas is over $425 a gallon here where I love, and reporters are still asking the experts if we are in a recession. Hello! We passed recession two years ago and left it in the dust of our depression! And when the "experts" say "It's just a little economic downturn," people still believe it.

I know a couple who spent eight grand buying chemotherapy and radiation for their dog with cancer. That's a luxury. They were a wreck, the dog was miserable, the vet techs were depressed and dispirited. The dog finally died in it's sleep one night. It even costs more to put an animal down in it's suffering, in times like these. Not everyone parts with a pet voluntarily. Some do, and shame on them! For many people now, it's a choice between feeding the kids or paying a vet bill. Which would you choose?

I agree...and yet, it happens all the time...some animals shouldn't have people for pets

The whole reason I bought a mobile home rather than rent an apartment was because I would not move without my animals

GREAT POST KRISTY!! Honestly!! You've really hit a soft spot with me too! People treat them like posessions sometimes and I just don't understand it. I got two of my dogs from people who "couldn't keep them" and a cat because "her boyfriend didn't like cats". I mean give me a freaking break! My son has asthma and allergies but I just clean super well. Here's a radical example. I once knew someone who sold their cockateil (who talked to them and everything) at a garage sale!!!!

this is exactly why I don't have a pet, even though I want one desparately. I could never be sure I could find an afordable place that would accept animals. And I'd live under a bridge before I'd give up my best friend.

You know, I've told my hubby the same thing, Kristy. You don't move to a place that won't take your animals, that's like leaving family behind. Who leaves a family member or gives one away

I can't imagine giving up my cats just cause I was moving! I'm with you on this one. Even TBD told me that he would never dream of asking me to give up my kitties for him due to his extreme allergy. Those are very bad people!

Got up on the wrong side of the chin-strap this morning, huh kid?
Only kidding!
I too have little patience with folks who have pets and don't bother to care for them. It bothers me to no end to see a dog spending his life tied to a doghouse with a twenty-foot rope, and the creature is just ignored day after day after day. Why have the damned dog???!!!
Hey, was it you who likes Mark Twain quotes? I forget. (I've got a great memory; it's just short.) Well, in the off-chance that it IS you, I've got a great one that I just heard for the first time yesterday: "I think God created Man because he was disappointed with the monkey."

awesome. I just don't get people. Big dogs are the HARDEST to find apartments with and living situations with, but geez, ya gotta do it, ya know? Well I guess you do!

I agree with you 100% I had a huge dog that I had for 17 years of her life and once on my own I had to live some strange places and pay high pet deposits to keep her. I did because I made a commitment. I currently have a "friend" I got for her who is probably around nine. I still live only pet friendly places.
