School, Jobs, Economy

I have not felt like writing too much lately. I blame it on the economy. Our health insurance went up, it was already sky high. Trying to make ends meet has become near impossible. So I am job hunting. I don't want to go back to my previous field, accounting. Too high stress. So I have applied to walmart of all places. Checking the want ads. The problem is going to be my leave of absence from the work force for 7 years.
We won't be homeschooling Kota. Too expensive right now. Last year his school had only kindergarten and first grade in it. This year he will go to the elementary school. Hopefully some of the kids he had problems with will be going to the other elementary school in the district. Kota is looking forward to going back to school. What I need is a job that will work around his school schedule. Hah! Doubt I will find that! Even if I could just find something part time, a few hours a day.
Tae Kwon do - Last night I tried a new kick in class. They are all about pushing you to try new things. This was a jumping kick and I did it pretty good. Taking class helps me release my frustrations and anger. Anger at how this economy has deteriorated and how we used to be able to survive.
I found a cheap grocery store around here. They don't have name brand stuff, its all off brand. But so far everthing has been good. And its saved me a few dollars. Its also right next to our tae kwon do place. So while Kota takes the second class, I do our shopping.
Its easy to get discouraged for me. And I don't remember ever having to struggle so much to make ends meet. So for now, its back to filling out employment applications. And keeping my fingers crossed that someone will call.

Mary, It's so depressing to re-enter the work force after being a stay at home Mom. I hated the thought of it. I hated to be away from my kids. But then, like most things, you adjust and make it work. Best of luck friend.

I'll just keep praying for you. I know how to do that.

Have you thought about applying to be a teacher's aide?????? That would work perfectly with his school schedule!

Whenever I get a few dollars ahead, I buy some food with a long date on it, and put it by for the time when I can't afford something like raspberry jam for cookies. I don't bake anymore, but have a friend who is highly motivated to make cookies every time someone gives her a jar of jam. This time I am holding back a jar of Kadota Fig Preserves. I can only imagine what she will make with these. I once gave her a half pound of really nice dates, and she made date/shortbread cookies to die for. But she is very understanding about keeping off all the weight I lost, so I usually get two or three cookies.

Ah, Mary... I think the economy is affecting everyone. People are so unhappy all over. In our town, people never used to honk their horns. Now I hear it all the time. Even the clerks in the markets aren't as nice as they used to be. It is so discouraging to have to worry about so many people doing without things that they really need. Hope something happens to make it better soon. Maybe with a new administration... except we're in so deep now that it will take some doing, but there's always hope. Maybe we'll have some really smart appointments who can figure it all out. Sorry things are such a struggle. Wish you luck...

Create your job Mary...just sit down and think about things that make you happy and look to see if passion can be turned into to money. It sounds foolish, but it really isn't. Why get a job that reinforces...clock watching and survival means...dream a bit and put it into action with a passion, how could you fail? Best of luck my friend, I wish you the very best...look only to the moment at hand.

Don't be discouraged, Mary. I also went job hunting after two years of not working and got hired on the spot. It's possible to find a job that you really like. Hang in there, it will all work out for you.

Best of luck with the job hunting. I really understand what you are going through. After Ray's heart attack,I was working three jobs and overtime to try to pay the bills. It wasn't easy, but we did get through it, and I know you guys will, too!
I have a feeling Kota is going to thrive in this new school!

Mary, I totally feel your pain on the money issue. It's getting harder and harder just to make ends meet and every month, I seem to have less than the last month.Maybe sit down and have a chat with those angels of yours and ask for the job that you want? Might not hurt...

Good luck. I hope you find a job that will help you make ends meet. Maybe babysitting or something that allows you to work from home? Places like that grocery store you found are always great for helping you save a few bucks. We live across the street from an expensive grocery store... and while the conveniences is nice, it's much cheaper to just spend the gas money and drive to the more affordable Superstore across town.

I hear you Mary the U.S. economy and how it affects us "normal" people is just ...a sad state of affairs.. Good luck in your job hunt and try to keep your head up

I so hear ya on being broke. I am not a fan.
Did you ever look into pet sitting? Mid Day dog walking might be exactly what you are looking for... it's good exercise and it's fun! Much better than Wal-Mart...

That's one of the perks I miss working at the store. If it went out of code I brought it home and froze it. I'm almost out of cheese. Still have a lot of blue cheese but not much else. Shopping sucks. I could send you an order for some jewelry, if it would help?

Try driving a school bus. They train you and you have the same hours as Kota and he rides with you. Just a thought.

I saw a TV news item about stores that sell date-expired goods. I sure wish we had one of those here! Some of the stuff was really cheap, but the quality wasn't any different. A family of six claimed they saved $300 a month shopping there.
