Partners, Estate Sales and Books

I always feel guilty when I go to an estate sale knowing that
someone's cherished things are being picked over. I still
go despite the moral dilemma. There was a good one three
blocks from me this morning. I got Ted all settled with coffee, medicine and breakfast and got there early. I purchased a pretty white quilt, two lovely tablecloths and
8 napkins all for 25.00. I bid on a boudoir chair but
probably won't get it, and I am going back tomorrow to see
if a candelabra that I like is there at half price. I find
that you have to be willing to lose items you like when you
are a bargain hunter. I washed everything and it looks
really good.

I am re-reading Pride and Prejudice because it turns out
so well and I enjoy the gentle manners. I am also reading
the sixth or seventh book in Will and Ariel Durant's series.
They are witty, entertaining and informative and it makes
perfect bedtime reading because there is no rush to get to the end and stay up too late.

This got me musing on parnerships and I thought of a few.
Sonny and Cher, Burns and Allen, Laurel and Hardy, Abbot
and Costello and of course Will and Ariel Durant. I loved
"I've Got You Babe" and some of Sonny and Cher's other
good ones.

Laura's post about language got me in the mood to share a phrase
I truly hate..."I've got your back" or "He's got my back".
It is old biker talk and goes right along with baby mama
in my opinion.

How sad that your cousin wants to die! I am glad that you and Fredo are so full of life (even if he does sound like a bit of a curmudgeon once in a while). Enjoy your estate sales!

Oooh, yeh... "I Got You Babe" by Sonny & Cher is one of my faves too! I used to enjoy them when they had their variety show on TV back in the day.

I thought they were great together.

baby mama whenever i hear young people say that I always laugh because they sound so stupid!

It is stupid to have a lot of baby mamas running around with baby daddy
as free as a bird.

I do what you do via TV's "Pickers", "Antique Roadshow", and "Market Warriers". But it's sort of like watching the Food Channel--I want to go out and try it!

Those sound like the kinds of things I would have bought. I'm embarrassed to say that I still hit the garage and estate sale trail every Saturday. Here I am, trying to get rid of things and still doing that! But I have a list of things that I actually need, so I am always on the lookout for a good bargain. Today I bought some lovely decorative storage boxes. I thought they'd be good for organizing cards, letters, pictures, whatever. And I had fun! Maybe that's reason enough.

Estate sales and garage sales are fun and you can get nice things that have
been gently used rather than cheap Chinese stuff at Walmart. It is my
entertainment.

Recently I was watching a reality cop show, and as they entered an apartment with guns drawn, the policeman in back kept contact with the one in front of him by hanging onto the back of his shirt, I suppose so he'd know he was there, and they would stay together. I remembered you talking about that phrase and it seemed like I was seeing it in action.

All I can think about when I hear it is Sandra Bullock telling Barbara
Walters in an interview that Jesse James, the sleaze she was married to had
her back and all the time he was screwing every tattooed woman he could
find. I think baby mama is kind of cute but the usage of both phrases lowers the level of language.

downsizing ha. Ed still loves to go to antique stores and we can't display everything he buys. And the attic is full of linens with his late wife's first husband's monogram. I think they will shred from the humidity but I don't care.

I think Ed and I are alike in that we never had nice things as children
and shopping is fun for us. We are both drawn to antiques. However, I
donate a lot of stuff to Cerebral Palsy, Habitat for Humanity and the
Viet Nam Veterans thrift shop.

Hmmm.. Fredo makes an interesting comment, although I said just the opposite to Donna yesterday. You went ahead and had the outside of your place landscaped and some people we camp with at 4C Camp for Adults--in their 90s--learn to play new instruments and have work done on the house. In my discussion with Donna I attributed longevity to this behavior.

I think it is a statement that you plan to be around for awhile. I didn't
have my yard landscaped, I did it myself. It was well worth it to me. I
think when you get old and no longer have goals you just want to die. A
case in point is my cousin who told me she really wants to die and she is
two years younger than I am.

well the estate sale there sounds interesting and confusing.Confusing is why do you keep on buying things at our age we should get rid of things. But you seemed to keep adding.
I know that this is a sickness as Mike and I went through with this.
Just asking?Do know that it is fun. Both of us went to the shops this afternoon.Yes,we still have the bug,but did not buy anything.

fredo, you bought a new car last year and that is just as foolish as me
buying household goods. I plan to drive my car as long as it holds out
because it is a big expenditure and I don't want to commit to payments or
settle for something less dependable and comfortable. However, I do have
people over for dinner and I like nice table linen. You and Mike can eat
off this new beauty when you visit us again.
