Another Nasty Election

I have been reading the book, America's First Daughter by
Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie about Martha Jefferson.

It is partially fiction but it led me to do some research
about the election of 1800 between Thomas Jefferson and
John Adams. Some of the vile slanders that were hurled
were that John Adams was an evil tyrant and a criminal.
Thomas Jefferson was purported to be dead, an atheist and
a swindler who was the off spring of a mulatto and an
Indian Squaw.

Due to a defect in the constitution which has now been remedied, The vice president and the president were voted
on separately and received the same number of votes. The
election had to be resolved in the house. Alexander Hamilton was instrumental in getting Thomas Jefferson elected because of the lesser of two evils argument.
Civil war was feared and the militia was on alert.
Does this not tell us that history repeats itself over
and over.

Get the book if you can, it is fascinating. We all know
about Sally Hemmings and I think this has been confirmed
by DNA. She had numerous children and due to infant
mortality at the time only a few survived.

elections have and always will be fraught with slanders, lies, mudslinging and fraud. This one is no different. Its just that the candidates are lamer than usual.

The description of that long-ago election is uncannily like the current one. Americans today think they have to elect Santa Claus, having no concept of what it takes to be a world leader. Anyway, no one is without skeletons. What I hope for is a person with integrity and talent. I think Hillary has both and this liar business was invented. I have back stories for saying this.

There's a video on my timeline on fb from Live Science where two young ladies recount the that incident and others. Very creative with language those guys were. Much more colorful than "nasty woman".

Being a nasty woman myself, I really got a kick out of some these
slanderous accusations.

Lately I've been remembering the horrific political cartoons they used to print in the newspapers a century or two ago, showing decapitated bodies and the politicians drinking the blood of infants. Parties hated each other as much as they do today. We've had it pretty civilized and easy for a long time, I guess. But it seems like our government is changing now and I'm not wild about the fact.

Politics is a dirty business. I was fascinated to learn that two of
Jefferson's children with Sally Hemmings could and did pass as white.
Jefferson listed them as runaway slaves but they were encouraged to
leave and blend into the white world. Jefferson once said that slavery
was like having a wolf by the ear but unlike George Washington who freed his slaves on his death, Jefferson's slaves except for the Hemmings were sold to settle his massive debts. This was such a horrible period of history.

I'll bet there are some real election horror stories out there over the years, but I think this one should stand out as one of the worst ones. I feel like all those potential candidates in years past who dropped out of the running because of some minor scandal or pretend scandal deserve a big apology because apparently decency and integrity are not required for that office.

It is all about the skill of the coverup. Most of us have things in our
lives that we wouldn't want dragged out into the open. Politicians are
no different.
