Genteel Poverty

There is a segment of our population that has to live so
frugally that most of us can't even imagine it. I have a
friend in my neighborhood who is an older divorced woman.
She volunteers at the food pantry and the humane society.
She attends the senior citizens lunches and regularly
takes home part of her lunch to eat at night. Sometimes
they have extras.

Most of her shopping is at the thrift stores and the
dollar stores.

She is a happy and positive person but life is not easy
and I know there are plenty of men and women who are old
and do not have an adequate retirement. Sometimes it is
a toss up between medicine and food. This is a shame in
a rich country.

I know that I am preaching to the choir but it is so
important to get out and vote and to reach out to others
and help them get to the polls. Hilary won't fix this
overnight but I do believe she has a commitment to those
who are less fortunate.

Your friend seems to be an example of the trend that poorer people are the most likely to help someone else who is poor. Good wishes to her.

There is age discrimination as well as gender discrimination and I feel
for my friend, although she would be the last one to feel sorry for
herself.

I have doubts about Hilbillery, but Trump is completely unacceptable. Throwing money at poverty hasn't done much from the 60s forward. The largest consequence is that too many people are dependent on government programs. Of course there are many contributing factors. But unlike Trump, I'm willing to accept the poor choice of the people--only because we really don't have a choice at all.

If your doubts have been fueled by 25 years of demonization of Hillary from right-wing accusers, ask yourself why you believe them when you believe nothing else they say.

You and I were on fire for Bernie but we know we must do everything in
our power to prevent Trump from winning. Like Teal, I am worried about
rioting from the deplorables if he loses.

Just watched the last debate. Hillary was very good. Donald wilted as the debate wore on. The big headline is that he refused to say he would support the outcome if he loses, saying "we'll see." Anslysts are saying this remark will finish him. I am still worried because he has a lot of potentially violent suporters who believe everything he says.

Trump's behavior is illegal and borders on treasonous and he is never
held to account for any of it. His threat of anarchy if he loses
is very real and it worries me too.
