A Moral Issue

Usually, I don't bother to read the letters to the editor from
our local newspaper which has a major conservative bias
and presents that point of view only. Today they printed
a letter from Richard Westmoreland of Edmond, Oklahoma
which gave a cogent view of health care in the U.S. and I
quote:

"More than thirty million Americans are without health insurance of any kind.

We spend more on health care than any country on earth.

The World Health Organazation ranked the United States
thirty seventh in access/affordability/quality of health
care among the nations of the world.

We spend 25 percent more per capita than the country
ranked first.

Health care bills are the chief reason for personal bankruptcy in this country.

Many of the less informed continue to point out that those
without insurance can go to the emergency room.If you
have no insurance and get cancer you are going to die from
cancer. The emergency room doesn't do chemotherapy.
The emergency room won't help you if you have a chronic
heart condition. If you have no insurance and your child
is born with a serious illness, the nightmare in store won't
be limited to the child's illness.

Health Care in this country is a moral issue. We should all
be ashamed that half of our citizens are so selfish. We
should be ashamed that money and special interest influence on law making than taking care of human beings
who are unable to care for themselves."

He made the point very well. My daughter works with
people who have no insurance. Many of them have cancer
and the only treatment they have is to self medicate with
alcohol. This is sad, sad, sad!

"If you have no insurance and get cancer you are going to die from cancer." This line isn't true. I was wondering the same thing, and my friend who is actually a cancer doctor said medicare kicks in. SOOOOO that actually is the same thing, since we the taxpayers pay for it anyways.

I think the Dr. was whitewashing. It is difficult to get medicaide and takes
ages. You have to be old to get medicare.

And the same can be said for gun control. Conservatives are destroying our country, killing our people, and bankrupting our nation.

I don't know why broke conservatives don't wake up and smell the coffee.
They think the l percent will provide them with jobs while they support
a candidate with a Swiss bank account and money in the Bahamas. He doesn't have a clue about how ordinary people live. A shotgun is all you
need to defend your home...the Glocks and assault rifles should be limited
to the military and the police.

People shouldn't have to lose everything to save their health.

The day of the old fashioned family doctor who put alleviating suffering before money is long past. No one is accepted without money or insurance. Lawyers are scummy but at least some of them do pro bono
work.

You'd better hope it wasn't just a slow news day.

It was very rare for them to print a letter they do not approve of. However, they have printed some of mine.

Yes, I am glad they printed it (also surprised). Our local paper has just endorsed all Republican candidates for state office. They're going to hear from me. They do print my letters that are also center/left commentary. They are not quite as bad as your local, apparently. A young man running for office handed me his card while I was out biking. He was nice looking and very sweet. He was a Republican. I thanked him for the card and went on my way. I didn't want to squash him in person. I will write him what I think.

Our local newspaper is so right-wing that before I read it in the morning I shake it to make sure all the swastikas fall out.

I was really surprised and delighted that they printed it. I guess I will
keep on taking the paper.

Interesting letter there and not sure if this will wake up America but doubt it.
Very sad to hear this what is going on with people with no insurance.

You have to care about the people who fall through the cracks. My daughter only has VA care because they can't afford insurance for both she
and her husband. Working for Cerebral Palsy, she sees so many desperate
people.

Wow! It is sad. Kudos to the author and the paper for printing this!

This is the first other side of the issue they have printed in a long time,
but my hat goes off to the author.
