The Lost Squirrel

Rex may live in a small yard but he hasn't lost his knack
for hunting. When we lived on the farm he had a place to
keep what he had captured and kept it hidden away. At one
time he killed a red tailed hawk and I mourned the loss of
plenty of rabbit families. He also stole shoes, neighbors
toys and almost anything they left out that attracted him.
Since Golden Retrievers are so charming, he got away with
it with no animosity.

Last night, before we finally got some rain, I was watering
the few plants that I have left and he came charging up with
a big old squirrel. They have fleas and carry a lot of
diseases. I am too squeamish to touch dead things and besides he wouldn't let me near him.

Of course he tried to follow me into the house with it but
I knocked it out of his mouth with a shoe before he knew
what had happened and he trotted in the house with me. Ted
sneaked it out last night when he was asleep and dreaming
squirrel dreams.

This morning he got me up early so he could go outside and
get it off the porch. He smelled where he had last seen it
and then he smelled all through the yard. His doggy brain
is still trying to figure it out.

You're up early this morning! It's 7:30 here, 6:30 your time. Can't sleep? Putting Rex out to pee and "hunt"? Enjoy your day. Has it cooled off?

Rex is a creature of habit and he is so well house broken that I don't
mind letting him out. I just put on the coffee and blog.

I think the worse thing my elkhound caught was a snake. I happened to be outside at the time. She was prancing around the yard throwing the snake up in the air and catching it. I couldn't make it to the back door. I was totally freaking out thinking that snake was gonna land on me sooner or later!

Ted got bitten by a copper head one time when he was trying to find out
what the dogs were barking about. It was very painful but they loaded
him up with anti histamine in intravenously and he recovered pretty fast.

Your dog is a riot! I know he is lovable and a lot of fun to live with.

He is a joy for both of us.

The boyz will attempt to catch anything that moves fast. Brings to mind a camping trip from a few years back. Benny was usually on a tieout as required by the rules and a chipmunk would taunt him, knowing that it was out of the "gotcha zone". Unfortunately for the 'munk, I let Benny out of the trailer one morning and the chipmunk didn't know that there was no gotcha zone. Just one squeak....

Definitely a mistake to make eye contact--that is taken as a challenge. There are some species of bear that will ignore humans and others that will attack. Unfortunately I can't remember which is which. What we have in the Catskills are safe. I think they're brown bears.

They have the instinct to pursue. I have always thought and read, that
if you encounter a dangerous animal, it is a mistake to look it in the
eye or run and sometimes to talk in a high voice. I guess it is better
to steer clear but I have friends that encountered a bear on a hiking trip
and they ignored it and it ignored them.

I feel sorry for the squirrel, but, then, I would. Rex is, however, being a doggy dog. Give him a hug for me. Max, youngest cat, the manx, is the major hunter now that Brunswick has slowed down. He brings in geckos. Sometimes, if they are still alive, I place a plastic container over them, slide a slim piece of cardboard underneath, and deposit them outside in the grass, with a stern admonition to be more careful next time.

I hope Max listened. I didn't feel sorry for the squirrel because they
constantly pull pecans off the tree, take one bite and throw them on the
ground. I hate sweeping them up.

Rex is quite a retriever, that's for sure! How old is he? Growing up, my family had a dachshund, Tinkie, who has quite a mouser. We lived next to a large meadow and creek, so she had a field day chasing critters, and she always brought her field mice prizes home to show us. She'd leave them on the welcome mat. One day she brought home a fish!

We had a dachshund named pupperdo when I was a kid. My mother always
screamed when she saw a mouse and he would run to the rescue and usually
was able to get there in time.

Yes,they always have instinct to hunt.Buffy chase chipmunk and anything that moves. He loves to chase the bird. Now that he is much older and his running quiet down some with his joint starting to bother him.But he still run and make me nervous for he may slip and hurt his leg.Rex was proud of his achievement.

Yes Fredo, I know how it is when your animals are older and get Achy joints. Our poor wolf was so pitiful.

He must have been so excited to capture that squirrel and had big plans for it. Whapping at it with a shoe - that must have been something to see.
comment by troutbend on Aug 9, 2011 8:35 AM ()
He was terribly proud of it and kept wistfully looking at it through the
glass.

Dogs never lose that "hunter" instinct. Holly's dogs constantly chase rabbits in her yard and have won a few times. It is sad, but what can you do? It's the normal life cycle in the wild. They also want to bring their treasures in the house. UGH!
comment by redimpala on Aug 9, 2011 7:06 AM ()
The squirrels here are such a nuisance. They always strip the pecans off the trees before they are ready. They take one bite and spit it out,
making a big mess.
reply by elderjane on Aug 9, 2011 10:58 AM ()
eiw! he is funny tho... It's also funny how they say dogs don't remember things, yet i think he gave you clear evidence that he remembered!
comment by kristilyn3 on Aug 9, 2011 7:05 AM ()
He certainly did remember it. He got me up thirty minutes early just to
go and get it. It was a huge one, he must have weighed 6 or 7 lbs.
