The Little Black Dress

All of my adult life, I have owned one. Scooped neck, three quarter sleeves, fitted and falling just below the knee. Alas, they are getting harder to find. They go everywhere and you can make them elegant with pearls or wear them with a jacket.

Why is this wardrobe staple either cut to the navel or embellished with all kinds of junk? I just want one made preferably of lined silk and very plain.

I guess I am whining about something trivial but it seems like such a little want to go unfulfilled. The pages of Vogue and Harper's Bazaar show nary a one.

Yes, I have one too. Owning one is a 'must'. Found my latest one at Sears, of all places! I sew, but have I gotten lazy.

I have always had at least one. Right this red hot minute I have three, but one is too big, and when I say too big, I'm not just whistling Dixie.
Most fabric stores know some people who sew for money. Ask around.

I have the perfect pattern but haven't made it up in black yet. If I put it on my to do list, I'll be 90 before I get to it.

Maybe they are just too classy for today's taste. I have a couple that are stables to my closet.

Yes! Every woman needs a slinky little black dress in preparation for and anticipation of almost any wonderful affair! (Do you sew? They are easy to make...)

As long ago as 1985 I needed a little black dress for a gala occasion -- the Awards dinner for journalism in this hemisphere at the Lowe Library at Columbia. All the major players were going to be there. (Chuck Scarborough, Charles Collingwood, Dan Rather, Walter Cronkite ...) My little black dress of old was no longer available. Sophie, my friend and piano teacher and just my size, gave me hers for the evening. It was perfect. I was a smash. Square neck, square low back with a flat bow, just at the knee, silk-lined of course. In those days little black dresses were still available but the prices had shot up to $400 and up and they weren't as nice as what I once got for $40. And have you noticed that at the top of your post there is a site for "little black dress"? I'm going to click on it.
