Life in the Desert

It feels like the desert and my poor plants are not handling
it well. I get out very early to walk and then start to water
as soon as I get home. The knock out roses that are
hardiness personified are getting some kind of rose disease.
I had to spray them this morning. If we can just get through
August, perhaps it will be better.

The house stays cool and if we can get by without a power
outage, we will be fine indoors. I try not to use anything but the air conditioner between two and seven because our electric company has us on a smart hours
program.

I am having friends over for dinner Saturday night. They
are leaving on an Alaskan cruise next Tuesday. I am
having roast beef. My kids always called it Roast Beast.

Last night I went out in the yard to do the pooper scooping
before Henry comes to mow and I said "hello baby" to the
little dog next door. Max answered from the shadows and
God knows what he thought about the eccentric lady
next door, scooping poop and calling him by endearing
names. Ted and I laughed about it when I came in.

This is library day and bank day. I really feel for people
who have no respite from the heat. The library is always
full of people soaking up the cool air. I am glad they
have there and Senior Citizen's places to go during the
worst part of the heat.

It is so hot, Jeri. I worked all week in this heat and tonight, all I want to do is drink water. Next week is supposed to be worse. I look forward to fall.

I don't see how you do it. As a child, I worked in the fields with my Mom and Dad and managed it. I guess youth helps.

I just got in the house from watering and I have a hundred bites in spite of
spraying myself before I went out. Ted is feeling better but can only stay
on his feet for l5 minutes. The stroke did a lot of damage that he wasn't aware of because of his back pain.

I felt like such a fool when he stepped out and started talking to me.
I am sure he thought dementia had set in.

I was out early this morning stuffing a plastic bag full of lawn and leaf waste because it is pick-up day. I was wearing long pants and long sleeves, but I got bit anyway. I also pulled weeds out of our stone-strewn patio. The barrier the former owner put down is totally deteriorated now. When I thought I might walk, it rained, so I cleaned the floor did other stuff and thought I was going to play the piano, but Max was flaked out there and I hated to disturb him. He hates the piano. Then I had to lie down. So it goes. I miss my old energy.

Our pets have a way of taking over our lives. We hate to leave Rex because he looks so sad and then takes refuge in our bed. I miss my energy too but I talked to a girl that I have known since the 5th grade and
she is in so much worse shape, having lost an eye. I guess we should rejoice in the fact that we still have everything and it is still working!

Whole roast beast (eye round) is on sale next week at $1.99lb. That is an incredible price and it's not drought related yet as far as I know. Meat prices may go down in the short run, but not this soon.

Stock up, that is a really incredible price. I love good pot roast with lots
of carrots and potatoes.

I love the dark inside of those old, stone buildings when it is hot outside. It is hot here too- very hot but the rains have started, thank goodness!

Dottie, it is time for you to get inspired and start painting again. Being
trapped indoors is a good time to get started on something new.

You and Mike set such a good example with your healthy lifestyle! We went to the Mexican restaurant you liked when you were here. I miss
our fun happy hours. Hug Mike for us.
