Happy Birthday America

Flags are flying all over the neighborhood but nary a firecracker will be heard. There will be fireworks at the park and at the base but they are illegal for individuals.

Bobby is grilling and bringing steak and hamburger over and I have been cooking all morning. We are having baked beans, potato salad, green salad, a fruit plate and
homemade hot rolls, sweet tea and cocoanut pie to go with
the smoked steak and burgers.

Sounds traditional doesn't it? I often think about the first
fourth of July when life was hard. I suppose we would be
having wild rabbit and making candles and cooking on God
knows what. There wouldn't be any fans or cool air anywhere. Making bread would be an almost daily chore
in some kind of make shift oven. Washing our clothes would
be done at the creek.

It was such a busy life but I will bet our forefathers were
happy. Think of it, they defeated mighty England and
started a new nation.

If fireworks are illegal why are there big tents all over the place selling "fireworks"??

So people can go to the country and set them off where there are no restrictions,

Our neighbor gave his traditional party. We are no longer invited -- no serious rift, but we have nothing in common. That's okay -- he shoots off fireworks, the noise is deafening. I always wanted to leave before that started. And his other friends bring new meaning to the word DULL. My fave way to watch fireworks is sitting shoreside on the East River and letting Macy's do all the work on huge barges. We've had major storms all week, yesterday no exception. All the parades (I guess -- we don't go) were waterlogged. Glad you enjoyed your day. It sounds like you had fun.

It is a good day for us when we get together. Unfortunately Linda doesn't get to join us often but we stay in touch by phone. I love spoiling my grand daughters.

July 4th is certainly a big thing there like our Australia day here , we are still stuck to the Poms but will be a republic one day

I have an inlaw living in Aussie land and he never intends to move back to the states. He loves it there.

I hope you've got some leftovers. It was really nice of the neighbors to include me in their picnic.

Glad you had a picnic to go to. It is a necessary thing. I sent the leftovers
home with Bobby and Ellie.

Your menu sounds better than wild rabbit!

It was good. I have eaten wild rabbit when I was a kid. My mother fried it like chicken and they called it Hoover chicken.
