Unexpected Pleasures

I reached in my mail box and pulled out a gift from Fredo.
There is unequaled pleasure in knowing that someone you
care for is thinking of you. Fredo and Mike are very thoughtful men.

I get so absorbed in the dailyness of life that I don't take
the time to think of ways to make other people happy.
Just a word of well deserved praise goes a long way.

On another note, the city has given us a painless way to
recycle. No sorting, it is just placed in their bin and is
picked up every two weeks. I am shocked at the number of
people who refuse to do it. Most of us re-use glass jars and
boxes and trade magazines and books with friends but evidently that doesn't apply to taking a little extra time with the trash.

We are deep into hot summer now. I find myself getting
sleepy after lunch, just as I did when I was a child.

I am reading all the books that I can find by Richard Russo.
He is a wonderful, humorous author who keeps you glued
to the page.

In the city here, if you don't recycle they will send you a notice asking you why you haven't put any out. And when my sister lived in a poorer area of the city, the recycle collectors didn't bother picking up, and she called the city and told them; so right after that they started collecting. Role models like Mister Rogers helped Pittsburgh get better about this. He drove to Florida for vacation, couldn't find any recycling bins so he actually brought his trash home.

Do you have to wash things out before they can be recycled? I swear that is the hiccup for some people.
Fredo is an awesome, thoughtful, man. I haven't met Mike but I am sure he's close!

Yes, thoughtful friends are the best. I have been taking naps after food since I was in my 20s. Low blood pressure is the culprit. After dinner with friends, hostess would actually say, "Time for Harriet's nap," and lead me to the bedroom.

How great that your sorting is taken care of. Ed is terrible -- I am constantly removing paper from the garbage and redepositing it in the recycle bin. He refers to me as "the recycle Nazi".

recycling bin is collected fortnightly here , not only good for environment, but also employment for sorters, then a monthly collection of hard large rubbish, save filling up the dumps. A good book really passes the time, though Cath and I watch a movie from u tube each day

I am surprised that people are so reluctant to recycle when they have made it so easy. It really cuts down on the amount that goes to the
landfill.

Afternoon naps are a wonderful thing.

Yes, especially when you have that drowsy feeling.

Curbside recycling is a tricky subject. Seems like every city has a different idea of how to approach it, including whether to let the trash company charge extra for it, or if it's a city service paid by property taxes. Our local landfill has 14 years left, and I keep thinking of back in the 1950s when every suburban home had a little sidewalk from the back door to the incinerator. Then, open burning was banned for air quality reasons, and while I appreciate clean air, I wonder how much thought was given to the vast amounts of trash that would end up in landfills. It was probably one of those 'never, never' deals where running out of space was 50 years in the future, and the powers that be would all be dead by then, so why should they care.

We have to pay a small fee..3.68 whether we do it or not but it cuts down
so much on the amount that goes to the land fill. Those stinky things fill
up way too fast.

It is the only sensible thing to do.
