Happenings

The sad situation in Japan grieves me deeply and I so hope
that there are no more nuclear power plants melting down.
It is utterly miserable to lose you home but to be exposed
to high levels of radiation also is unthinkable. Meanwhile,
in my little corner of the world, wildfires are rampant.
Thirty people have lost their homes in the Choctaw and Harrah areas. The fires were so devastating that there is
nothing left but melted metal and ash. The survivors are
poking around in the debris but have not found anything.
No life was lost which was a miracle. I hope Jerm's family
was spared.

Oklahoma City has spent a lot of money on the zoo so Ted and
I went Saturday. It is not user friendly anymore. They
have erected a lot of roofed decks with chairs for families
who want to picnic and added a lot of concession stands. There are lots of dead ends and we walked for two hours and
had not gotten to the elephants or the big cats. We took
a tram and could have gotten off at the elephant show but
Ted was just too tired to get off and see them and wait for
the tram again. Next time, we will get a tram first thing
and get off and catch it again for the things that we really
want to see. One tram ticket can be used any number of times in one day.

One of the elephants is due to have a baby just any time.
They just got back from visiting a male elephant in the
Tusa zoo. Elephant pregnancies last 22 months.

The meer cats were adorable. A woman dropped a potato chip
to them and it started a meer cat war. Another great feature
was the cage you could enter with tiny little parrots and
buy nectar. The little things would stand on your hand and
drink from it. I don't know the correct name for these birds but they were extremely colorful. One tried to take
a bath in his cup.

They have enlarged the habitats for the big cats and made
them more like a jungle with large stands of bamboo. They
had red pandas and they were quite small. It was too early
in the season for the dolphin show. The tigers did not
present themselves and chose to stay deep in their bamboo
forest.

I want to go again soon and this time it will be done
intelligently. Parking was awful and the lines were
long to enter the zoo. We had to park at the Science
Museum and that in itself was a long walk to the Zoo entrance.

We are getting a few drops of rain now and then. I wish it
was a downpour.

As a kid, my school sponsored field tips to the Brookfield, Ill. zoo. It was supposed to be really special. I enjoyed these trips. I got to see the animals too. Everything now is designed to draw people to concession stands.

I heard on the national news about the fires in Oklahoma. Hope you guys get rain soon. Didn't know that they had redone the zoo.

The Fort Worth zoo is like that. The animals are all in their natural habitats. I took Bailey to it some years ago. Sometimes, you don't even get a glance at the animals, but I suppose it is better for them.

It is so different. Ted said it was now rated as one of the top three but
it is difficult to get around in. Devon poured a lot of money into it.

I am horrified by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Their nuclear power plants explosions are just as scary. While over 10,000 presumed dead, it pales to the over 250,000 lives lost in Haiti last year. With all of the recent earthquakes and other natural disasters, it makes the 2012 Apocalypse theories sound less bizarre. (Still don't believe them, but they no longer sound as crazy.)

It is horrifying. Such a waste of life and perhaps the survivors will
have a worse fate. At least they are all getting the iodide pills.

Lately, Zoos seem to have put a lot of effort into trying to have better habitats for the residents, more natural. I cringe when I think of our Denver zoo in the 1950s, just naked rocks for the polar bears and seals, and naked dirt for everyone else. Now the hippo has a wonderful pond and the polar bears live in a refrigerator.

Before Katrina, I loved the New Orleans zoo. It was in the garden district
so probably didn't sustain a lot of damage but the best part was being
able to take a streetcar directly to it.

Family is fine. Mom called while all that was going on. Thanks for thinking of them.

I am so glad your family was spared. The devastation was terrible.

I loved going to the zoo.Brookly NY had a great one and also on Boston.
Yes,they me confined there. But I am sure they are happy to have someone
looking after them.Beside this is a learning tree.
Children and young adults can learn many things about these animals.

I love going and it is a learning experience. I guess the Meer Cats were
the funniest. They were scurrying around making tunnels and one was standing up and guarding the rest. They were just going on with their normal life.

I am totally with Solitaire on my feelings on the zoo. I won't go to them because I don't want to support their confinement. Did you see the movie Instinct?
Did you guys go to the zoo on a weekend? Maybe if you go during the week it will be easier to get around and park...

Life can be cruel in the wild and in it's way confinement is cruel because
they lose some of their freedom. Our zoo is trying to preserve the species. I will look for that movie. I really don't think the birds or
the meer cats suffered because they were doing what they would do in the
wild except no one would be feeding the birds nectar.

I always have mixed emotions about visiting the zoo. I'm in awe watching the "exotic" creatures, yet depressed regarding their confinement. Eventually, it may the only way to save some animals from extinction.

It hurts to see them confined and out of their natural habitat but on the
other hand they are comfortable and well fed and will be preserved for
future generations. I feel somewhat the same way about Rex. He traded
being wild and free for the benefit of being loved and cared for.
