Excess

Why are we obsessed with things we do not need? I have just finished reading a witty and scathing book about the values of the very rich. It is called " One Fifth Avenue "and is by Candace Bushnell. It is about people who will do anything to fulfill their fantasies, no matter how unscrupulous. It was very entertaining and I highly recommend it but it leaves a person wondering what people are thinking when they buy a five thousand dollar handbag or pair of shoes.

I would feel immoral even if I could afford it. In my world there are people scraping by on Social Security who cannot afford any transportation. Walmart shoes are a big treat for them. I think about the Excutives who ran their companies into ruin and then escaped with Golden Parachutes, leaving havoc behind. They are so removed from reality that they have no remorse about raiding pension funds and hanging their stockholders out to dry.

I have always heard that the mills of the Gods grind slowly but they grind exceedingly small. I do hope that there is some legal action taken against companies like Lehman Brothers and A. I. G. and their executives.

Somewhere we got it into our heads that buying things will make us happy, and over-priced things would make us happier.

That's one book I won't be reading. Infuriating. My "new" clothes come from Goodwill!

hear, hear. I agree. I would love for one of those rich morons, especially those CEOs to come and live my life for a month.

Our culture promotes excess and consumerism

I too cannot think of spending obscene amounts of money for items. If I had a lot of money I would spend more for things but not much more. I once stopped in a New York store to check it out. An ordinary looking skirt was $500. I walked out thinking, not in your dreams, even if I get filthy rich, will I pay anything like that for a skirt.

me too. I wish those golden parachute people would GIVE BACK from the people they stole from... yet another thing to add to my list of frustrations...
