Dreamers

This is excerpted from the Tulsa World in an article by
Ginnie Graham. It gives me high Hope that children who are
Latinos who came here at a young age will be able to get
citizenship by graduating from high school, and attend college or enlist in the military. It will be fought by
Republicans but the path to citizenship requires a l,000
just to take the test and rigorous testing.

At present, only 272 undocumented Latinos are attending Oklahoma colleges. They are lobbying lawmakers and educating student groups. This is far from amnesty. One
must be here five years, graduate highschool and have six
years to graduate college or be in the military. There would be no access to financial aide for this. It would
take eleven years to complete the process.

It is called The Dream Act and I am all for it. I think
it would alleviate bitterness and raise living standards.
We all know they work like worker bees and at jobs no
white or black will have. Unfortunately, I have no hope of
it passing in Oklahoma until the rigid Republicans who will
go to the brink of ruin and jepordize our country are all
convinced that human rights are possible and in the end practical.

It seems like a lot of new-comers to our country work hard and earn the right to be citizens, more so than a lot of native-borns who take their privileged status for granted and hold out their hand for tax-payer funded assistance rather than take jobs they consider to be beneath them.

So true. If common sense prevailed in Washington D.C., they would slash
medicaide fraud.

I'm a "dream actor". Indiana has similar problems. By the way, I just finished "Swamplandia!" Weird book, but fun. Hard to put down.

I am so glad you liked Swamplandia. I couldn't put it down either.

In 2000, Florida's governor, Jeb Bush, aided and abetted by a Conservative Supreme Court, discounted ballot discrepancies that favored Al Gore, and anointed George W. as President and Gore chose not to fight it because the entire effort had been so divisive. Thus we got Bush and everything that came with his mindset: the war, the striking down of financial regulations that led to excesses resulting in the mortgage crisis, and on and on.

What is interesting is that the lawyer for Gore and the lawyer for Bush later teamed up in California to fight Proposition 8 that is against gay marriage.

George Bush should have been impeached for plunging us into an unending
war. I am not surprised at anything he did.

I have to disagree. the problem is that the immigration laws are not being inforced. all those who are not here legally need to go back and immigrate the legal way. if you make exceptions for this and that, where does it end? unfortunatly, those with Hispanic sirnames and brown skin that are here legally are often lumped in with those who are not, and that is just wrong. I am four square against illegal immigration, be it by Hispanics, Swedes, Germans, Irish, English, Asians. Immigrate legaly and I welcome you with open arms and you are entitled to all the priviledges of full citizenship.

yer the law should be obeyed pal

The border is almost impossible to monitor. Many of them die trying to
make it to water and food. El Paso has always been full of Mexicans and
it is easy to blend it. They multiply like rabbits because Catholicism
makes birth control a no no. If they are arrested and deported they
sneak back. Gangs have control of Mexico and families aren't safe there.
They take a chance and always get jobs like roofing and concrete work
that break your back. Their children get into gangs and gang
warfare. Oklahoma City's S. W. side is a place I wouldn't go alone.
I really don't have the answer nor does anyone else seem to but I
think three years in the Marines would qualify one for citizenship and
the young ones would be realistic about birth control if they were educated.

We must rid ourselves of the notion that people who need help are not worthy. Skin color is a factor, and a self-important attitude (I did it without help) are major factors. I am up to here with people who have had advantages dumping on those who haven't. They have a selective memory about how they got where they are.

They have a right to be helped. You would not believe this state!
Is Florida that solidly Republican?

I fully support the Dream Act!

Me too, Marta. I just wish the Catholics would get real about birth
control.

I am torn on this one... I had heard that they go to school for free through the dream act which I am NOT for, since everyone else has to pay. I must admit I do not know the rules for sure, so take my comment for what it's worth.

No, they pay for their education through work study and awful jobs...roofing for example. The military is no picnic either.

I don't know why people think of brown skin tones when they think of illegal immigrants. My mother was German who died an undocumented, illegal immigrant. I think the Dream Act makes a lot of sense and demonstrates their willingness to be contributing members of American society.

I guess The rigamarole that I saw Ellie go through to get legal status is
just too much. They sent her back to Russia twice and if it hadn't been
damaging to Adrienne's psychological health, they would have made her stay
three years before they let her come back. We jumped through all the
hoops they threw at us and our Congressman got involved. (a Democrat, of
course.) It was a pure nightmare. And we got lucky!
