My Daughter's Life

Linda has four children and her son is severely autistic.
I invited them by for lunch and I hadn't seen Eric in a while
since I don't get to Tulsa more than once a year. I had fixed
a roast for their lunch with all the trimmings and fixed Eric's plate just before they came. He usually runs by his
plate, grabs a bite of food and gallops around the room. He
sat at the table and ate like a gentlemen. Much to the surprise of all of us. He was fascinated by Rex, but fearful.
I wanted him to pet Rex who has endless calm but he never
quite got the nerve to do so. I think a golden retriever
would be great for him to bond with.

They were here for a visit to O. U. Medical Center. Eric has
had a heart transplant as an infant.

I finally got a copy of The Help at the library. I started
to read and was enthralled. I could hardly stop last night.

Ashley is performing at Rose State College. Today they are
showcasing all cultures and there will be ethinic food and
music. I am going with Ellie and the girls. I hate to leave Ted alone but hopefully he will be encouraged to
exercise. He is doing well on his diet.

I always dread the first of the year...taxes and all that
sort of thing. I took a load of Ted's clothes to the cleaners. It seems to be colder than usual this year and I
have a ton of yard work to do. I need to get everything
mulched and try to get a place fixed in the garage to save
some of my plants. I would like to put pampas grass against the house where the former owners had white rocks.
The rocks are just plain tacky. I get lots of ideas walking
around the neighborhood.

Have a great weekend.

Ok, I had to look up the book, "The Help". Never heard of it before. Children who suffer with Autism are so sad. I don't know how their parent's cope.

I am having an emotional day so reading about Eric's sitting at the table is making me a bit weepy.

I'm jealous of your gardening abilities. My motto has reluctantly become, "I tried but it died."

Many individuals with Autism do respond well to animals, the theory being that animals are sensory reliant creatures who rely only on their senses to make their way in the world, like people with Autism, as opposed to us neurotypicals who rely more heavily on our emotional connections to other people. The theory doesn't apply to all people with ASD, however. Julian is not much of an animal person, either and he has had plenty of exposure.

So nice that you could enjoy a visit together with your daughter and Eric. Dogs have bonded wonderfully with autistic children. I think some are trained specifically to help people with autism. I'm still on a waiting list at my library for The Help. Really looking forward to reading it. I'm going to look up pampas grass on Google images. I've never seen it. Maybe it doesn't grow this far north....

I kinda like rocks, a lot less maintenance and they can look nice...
I read the help and loved it! I am sure you will too!

I enjoyed the help and was especially amused by the two slices of pie!
What an excellent revenge.

That pampas grass looks so nice, it'll dress up that side of your house.

I really love Pampas grass. Mine is blooming now. I got the plants in the
rock garden mulched yesterday afternoon.

It's interesting that Eric ate gracefully -- shows he knows what to do and how to do it. Did you gently place his hand on Rex's fur? Or was that too threatening?

My idea of a dream way to live would be to have a gardener/landscaper come by every week, mow and trim, fertilize and bag stuff for "lawn and leaf" pick-up, that I never had to deal with in NYC. Ed mows and pulls palm fronds down, but he never trims the bougainvillea that will overhang our walk-way and hit me in the face if left untended. I do it when I can and there goes the day.

I really love to get out and do the actual work in gardening. I fancy myself
as having a green thumb. I kept my plants alive through this drought, only
losing two. Eric had never been around an animal before and he kept peeking
at Rex and then hiding his head. We know he had a good time because he had
a continual smile on his face. I thought it was interesting that he was
able to sit down at the table and eat. Julian's Mom would know all about
this, with all she has been through.

Yes,Golden is a fine dog to bond with.
Sound like a great dinner prepared there.
I am surprised the amount of work that you do there.
Lots of energy put into it.Good luck there.
Take care.Ted feeling better?

Fredo, I don't believe the child had ever been close to an animal before.
They keep Eric at home most of the time because they never know when he
will have a total melt down.

Ted is not feeling a whole lot better, but I know have him enrolled in a
health plan and medicare to be effective when he becomes 65.
