Changes

I am a passionate believer in change. My whole professional
life was involved in making changes in behavior. Now that
we as a nation have become rude and surly, with very bad
manners, I am wondering where we have gone wrong.

Change can be taught. People can learn to accept differences
and other cultures. Children can be taught to be practical,
sensible, polite and tolerant adults. They can also be
taught to be empathetic and caring.

I blame fanaticism for many of the bad things in our lives.
Baptists hate Catholics, Catholics hate Muslims and all
religions hate agnostics and atheists. How about a little
tolerance for other beliefs and other life styles?

We have too lenient a view of undisciplined behavior even
though you can read the consequences of it in every newspaper.
This generation of children seems to be more unruly, more
impulsive, more violent and more depressed than the previous
one. This really discourages me when I think about the
future.

Change has to start with one individual at a time. We have
to be committed to help effect change in whatever way we can.

I don't like the radical Muslims that want to kill Americans, other than that I don't care what religion you choose, or if you don't choose one, that's fine too! I am not a religious person by nature though so perhaps that is why it's easy for me to say I am open minded on it. I believe in a God, I just don't understand the organization around it for the most part.

I can't even get people in my house to get along!

Life is hard enough without dissension. I just heard that Henry, our handyman's wife has multiple cancer and one is too close to her heart to
operate until they shrink it, One of the women in my antique club is not
yet fifty and is in the hospital at deaths door and my son is not doing well. So much illness and sorrow. Tell them they are lucky to be healthy
and well.

Can't really blame the kids. Responsibility lies with the parents. In my day, it was never a parent who complained that the kids had too much homework. A minor example, perhaps, but it's a new mindset. "Children should be heard". LOL Somebody rewrote the old expression. I prefer it the old way.

Schools are no longer allowed to discipline unruly children. You should
hear some of the language I hear in the highschool parking lot. Two guys in
cars were playing chicken when I picked up Adrienne. She told me that one
senior boy had already been killed this year in an accident. Old fashioned
as I am, I think actions should have consequences.

One reason there is no civility in our culture is it is not a valued trait - rudeness is rewarded. Parents are not good role models, and television, which is how most of them do their parenting, is worse.

You are right on the money. It is a lot of trouble to teach children instead
of letting the tv babysit.

I have no answers on the bad behavior thing but I do believe younger generations have a more pronounced sense of entitlement and much less respect for others.
comment by dragonflyby on Nov 5, 2012 9:20 AM ()
There seems to me to be a lack of empathy and compassion among young
children.

Jeri,I am afraid this is going to get a bit worse. The new generation is all together different than ours.We have so much hatred and it is scary. The next thing that they will be fighting among each other.I do not blame the children too much.It is the adult who is behavior who do not teach their family. So we give them a break. They are so spoiled by the hype of this country.
See very young children with all the electronic devices and not sure if they know what a book is.
Glad that I am not in today generation.
comment by fredo on Nov 5, 2012 8:21 AM ()
I think all these electronic devices are substitutes for nurturing and it
is not working. Kids need affection and hands on contact. They see all
this brutality and rudeness on tv and think it is normal.

Humans are supposed to be the superior species, but your Rex exhibits preferable behavior.
comment by steve on Nov 5, 2012 7:26 AM ()
Rex is never rude or mouthy or distant. Just like Hobster and his family,
he dishes out love and goofy play. He also keeps the bed warm and cozy.

A philosopher once wrote, "The Universe is all disorder and chaos is its glue."
comment by hobbie on Nov 5, 2012 5:15 AM ()
I agree about the disorder and chaos but I think it is worse now.

Horrid behavior in the young is not new but maybe it is now more extreme. What is more frightening is how religion has divided the country. People are using religion to advance personal bias and control others. And wealthy right wingers have caught on that the devout can be manipulated.

I think that G.W.Bush exploited the right wing Christians and that is how
he was elected twice. It is hard to beat that coalition of Republicans and
religious fanatics or the otherwise misled. I saw a black man driving a
very old car with Impeach Obama on it. I wanted to stop him and ask him
why. I was told by another blogger that he would vote for whoever was
best for Christians. Just like Muslims and Buddhists and agnostics should
not have equal rights.
