For Cat Lovers

The Association For Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has given a 30,000. dollar grant to our Central Oklahoma Humane Society which will enable them to sterilize a number of colonies of feral cats.

Ted and I had adopted a feral female on the farm. Evidently she was pregnant at the time because she gave birth to three kittens. One was a long haired siamese, one
was a black and white socks cat and the other was the tortoise shell like her mother. I remember that when I first handled the kittens that the little things hissed at me. By the time their eyes opened they liked human contact.

The article in the Oklahoman states that the feral cats are not adoptable and that they do not meow which seemed very
strange to me. Does it mean they only meow because we talk to them?

Trap-neuter-release programs have located 350 colonies of
feral cats. They reproduce so fast..five to six litters
per year...that the humane society is always busy. I want
to volunteer at the Humane Society when Ted gets to feeling
better.

feral cats here are a prescribed pest . a lot of our wildlife even the Tamar wallabies are being killed by feral cats , once they erected a dingo (dog ) fence to protect sheep , now conservationists are erecting fences to keep cats out of reintroducing wildlife areas.
Australia --no cats of any kind were here until they were introduced like the foxes and rabbits

I meant Humane Society (but you knew that).

Ed has talked of volunteering at the Human Society but I don't think I could handle it -- I'd want to take them all home.

It would be a temptation. We gave two of the kittens away but no one wanted the tortoise shell. We kept her and she was a wonderful cat.

I have never heard that feral cats do not meow. I have converted four (the momma and her three boys) but it took me nearly two years before they liked being touched and held. When I think back, they used to hiss and cower but I don't remember them meowing. They are very vocal now, especially one of the males, but they still do not like being inside for very long. They will come in to eat and want to go right back out. I don't think I could volunteer 'cause I would bring them all home with me and my husband would move out!

My family has a genetic weakness for cats. My grandmother had 25 and my cousin has l7. They had only a couple of house cats and fed and cared for
the others outside.

It would be a worthwhile cause. You are right about wanting to adopt them all.

Sorry,do not know too much about cats.Never heard of them.
Do they do any tricks.

Since you never heard of them, let me tell you about their best trick. They can get their owners to do almost anything.

Wonder if feral cats purr? I think you might enjoy volunteering. We have a

I don't know but since kittens purr while they nurse, they surely must.
poor things don't have much to purr about when they are wild.

I had no idea that feral cats did not meow. That is very interesting.

It is interesting. I was at the zoo one time and the snow leopard kept
looking at me and meowing. She acted as though she would like to go home with me and we thought she probably was raised by someone who looked or
smelled like me.
