Watch This!

This is really going to be a wondrous sight.

Planet Mars will be the brightest in the night sky starting August. It will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. This will cultivate on Aug. 27 when Mars comes within 34.65M miles off earth. Be sure to watch the sky on Aug. 27 @ 12:30 am. It will look like the earth has 2 moons.

The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287.

Share this with your friends as NO ONE ALIVE TODAY will ever see it again.

I am so sorry Jay did not live to see this. He so loved astronomy.

furthermore, I don't go to bed till 1 a.m. so it ain't a big deal for me to step out into the patio and look up and if it ain't there, it will still be a beautiful night looking at the starry sky.

If you read all the comments, it will be apparent that it did indeed happen and the E mail is still floating around as if it is in the future.

Yeah, jjoohhnn is correct.. this event isn't even possible. Mars doesn't come anywhere near that close. The moon is so close to us that it has been gradually slowing down over the millions of years because of Earth's pull on it; a much bigger object like a planet coming so close would exert such terrifying gravitational forces that we'd have global disasters.
This particular internet legend has been going around for at least 6 or 7 years.

But jjoohhn says this happened in 2003 -- see his comment below. I'll still watch for it.

You are right. It costs nothing to step outside and look.

It's not exactly a hoax. The fact is, the event took place in August of 2003, but the email keeps circulating.
comment by jjoohhnn on Aug 1, 2010 7:38 PM ()
Let me guess... you heard about this event in email.....

I will resist the temptation to say more because I like you!

No, I didn't. A friend sent it to me. Are you saying it's a hoax? In any case, it doesn't cost anything to step outside on August 27th.

I'll be sure to watch for this. One of my favorite sites is Astronomy Picture of the Day.
