The Twinkie Defense and Related Issues

The following came to me from The Daily Share, a part of MoveOn, a non-profit, progressive/liberal policy group:

Imagine, some people refer to these executives as “job creators.”

We wonder when the media will report that while Hostess was trying to cut Bakers’ pay by 8% and benefits by 32%, their CEO gave himself a 300% raise.

Nine Hostess executives received 60% to over 100% raises, while filing for their second bankruptcy.

Meanwhile, they stopped paying into the employees’ pension, owing them over $160,000,000.

But, yes, let’s blame the 18,000 workers making less than $20 an hour for the fact that Hostess had to close their doors.

***

Let’s again hear the argument that the half of the country who “voted for the President because he promised them ‘stuff’” are the takers.

As for the argument that Republicans are taking stock after their disastrous defeat, note that throughout the country, states that tried to impose voter suppression laws are still at it, hoping to influence future elections.

Also, if the Congress doesn't strike an equitable deal to avoid the fiscal cliff, we are in real trouble and it will still be because of Tea Party obstructionism.

Finally, Chris Christie, New Jersey's governor who was so appreciative of President Obama's help during the Sandy crisis, is being villified by his party. If I were he, I would seriously consider becoming an independent.

In 2008, then Republican Governor Crist of Florida, extended voting days and hours in Florida, greeted Obama warmly (unforgiveable) when he visited the state, and was blamed by Republicans for the 2008 loss. So the Party turned against Crist. He then ran as an Independent against the oh-so-cute and crassly opportunist, Marco Rubio, and the Democrat whose name has fallen into obscurity, and lost his bid for the Senate because of the split vote. It was widely rumored that Ted Kennedy and the Democrats in general preferred Crist but couldn't say so and throw the local Democrat under the bus, a man not really qualified.

In the aftermath, Crist sat with Obama at the Democratic convention, and will run as a Democrat to regain the Florida governorship in 2014. Current Republican Governor Scott has a low approval rating and was responsible for cutting voting days and for the deliberately long and confusing ballot (10 pages)designed to lengthen the voting process and discourage voters. We were so angry, we stayed in line, some for as long as 8 hours.

If Florida wants a democracy, we'll vote him out in 2014. My particular section of Florida stays red, but the state went for Obama and that is the BEST revenge.

Hostess Brands has been in trouble for years. As Interstate Bakeries, the company sought bankruptcy protection in 2004. It emerged from bankruptcy in 2009, but only after it closed nine bakeries and 300 outlet stores. Hostess declared bankruptcy again in January, 2012. It blames unions that represent many Hostess workers for the company’s financial problems, especially pension and medical costs for retired employees. Union leaders say the problem is bad leadership, and point to huge raises given to top executives at the same time that the company complained that its workers were overpaid.

Hostess Cupcakes have been around for more than 90 years. Twinkies were invented in 1930. The brands became part of Interstate Brands in 1995, before the downhill slide began and the company changed its name to take advantage of the nostalgia value of the Hostess name. Experts say potential buyers have expressed interest in Hostess’ better-known brands. After last-minute mediation talks ordered by a bankruptcy judge failed this week, new ownership may be the only way to save most of the bakery jobs and the iconic snacks.

It's disgusting when companies are badly managed and then blame the employees while raiding what is left of the profits.

Re: election. After the results were in, excluding FL, I never heard anything more about how FL voted. What happened there? Did Obama win?
comment by boots586 on Nov 23, 2012 11:15 AM ()
Yes, Florida went to Obama despite Gov. Rick Scott's efforts to muddy the waters with needlessly long ballots (10 pages) and short voting period. People got angry and stayed in line, the last vote being cast in Miami-Dade around 2 a.m. Wednesday. They just finished the count about a week ago. Scott has a low approval rating. We MUST vote him out when he is up for re-election in 2014. If you want details, you might try Googling Florida 2012 election results.

Other comments have pretty much said it all. Good post.

I hear what you're saying (re Crist) but I find it intellectually impossible to ascribe laudable motives to any politician. I will say that I'd readily chose him over Jeb Bush or your current Cro-Magnon.

I am a tilter against injustice and have a lot of anger in me for those who allow their personal motives to interfere with solutions, but I cannot be a cynic. I know people of integrity. I know it is possible to have it. You appear to have it. Why can't you conceive that others, including politicians may also have it. Cynicism excuses inaction. Inaction solves nothing.

I heard on MSNBC's "Last Word" tonight (sub host Ezra Klein) that many Americans eligible for insurance under the Obama plan don't know it and have to be reached and insurance companies are working with activist groups to inform them because the more people who are insured the better it is even for them.

Injustice abounds. I hate it so much.

Maybe the employees can buy the company after the bankruptcy is resolved. It ought to go for a song (or a Twinkie.)

The Republicans will not learn a thing from their defeat. They cling to exclusion as a policy, are anti-women, anti-gay, anti-everything that doesn't include a tax cut for them. Their welding to the fundamentalist cabal means they must appease the pulpit-pounders.

Doesn't Charlie Crist know how to perform honest, private labor of some sort? The guy's a professional pol, moving from one office to another to another. I found his being Fla's Attorney General laughable, since he had to take the Bar Exam 3 times before he passed. **Re the Hostess execs: they ought to be sentenced to have to eat their own Twinkies 3 meals a day.

Charlie Crist, whether or not he has book smarts on a level that would impress you, has shown integrity in his handling of issues and I do believe that is more important. As for "moving from office to office" -- it's just possible he wants to serve.

I saw something along the same lines the other day: the big companies who are saying that Obamacare will put them out of business and they will have to make all their employees part-time so they don't have to pay for health care are still finding the cash to hand out big bonuses to management, have lavish retreats and conventions, and other business as usual. It's another version of the Twinkie defense: blame Obamacare.

The Twinkie defense was used in the murder of gay politician Harvey Milk in San Francisco.
By the way the CEOs of Hostess took home over $1 mil in bonuses so you can understand why they didn't have money for the em[employees, don't you?
