Sexual Hijinks Among the Famous

There have been debates on TV about whether or not your personal life should indicate if you would be a terrible political choice. The men thought not, and the women weighed in to say that if you cheat in your personal life, you will cheat in your public life.

My own opinion is that there are various kinds of cheating. What Schwarzenegger did was hurtful to his family, but through it all, he was devoted to them. Maria only knew when he told her.

John McCain, John Edwards, Newt Gingrich, all cheated on their wives when they had cancer. At the moment in their lives when their wives needed them most, they were “moving on”.

This is a moral lapse that goes beyond philandering. This is sociopathic behavior. That, I believe, is the difference between Arnold and the rest.

Do you really think Maria didn't know about his cheating? The maid wasn't the only one - he had a history of promiscuity before they married and he continued his philandering throughout the marriage. It surely hurt the marriage and his children and shows a poor character. If a man or woman has such a lack of integrity, they are not trustworthy.
On another note, I feel very bad for the child - what a horrible way to find out your dad isn't your father after all. I hope Mom handles it well so it doesn't damage him. How devoted was Arnold to that boy?

I suppose 'everybody does it' isn't much of a defense.

FDR and JFK both cheated on their wives. It didn't seem to interfere with their ability to serve well.

The country as a whole has been led to believe that we deserve perfection and saintliness in our leaders. It's an infantile approach to life. Sanctimony rules.

You hit the nail on the head.

It's a complex issue. I've experienced the temptation. It amazes me how the power of sex overwhelms common sense. I have no answers.

its hard to find anyone in policits who isn't a lying, cheating, scumbag. I don't know why Maria was surprised by Ah-nuld's behavior. She's a Kennedy and her grandpa and uncles were notorious.

Regardless of the circumstances, it is the most vile form of betrayal.

I think leaving a spouse when the spouse has a life-threatening disease or is dying is the most vile form of betrayal. A wronged wife can pick herself up and find someone better. A dying one dies with two kinds of agony -- physical and emotional -- bereft, no solace, no comfort.
