Religious Zeal Srikes Again

News Item:
From Messiah to Martin: Judge Renames Child |
A judge told two parents in Tennessee they couldn't name their son Messiah, saying that name belongs only to Jesus Christ.

There was a video of a woman (she might have been the judge) who said that the name belongs to only one person – it has to be earned -- and that person is God.

If you want to know what is wrong with this country, that sums it up.

The couple said they didn’t have a religious reason for choosing that name—they just liked the sound of it.

I would name a boy Gautama or Arjuna if I had a child. If it was a girl I'd name her Teal.

Justice is suppose to be impartial, but obviously this judge is letting her personal bias interfere with her judgment.

With people like that there only seems to be one side to the story...their's!

The deeply religious do not see themselves as biased, merely as "right".

As bad as that name is, I'd wonder where that judge thinks she got the authority to re-name the poor kid. Stupid celebrity child naming goes back to Sonny & Cher. I suspect that when they named their child "Chastity" they pre-ordained what would happen to her...oops, I mean him.

I wasn't offended by the name they chose. I can even relate to Hispanic kids named Haysous (Jesus). I was outraged at the assumption that everyone in the world has to observe Christian dogma as if it were the only criteria for anything.

Now I have heard it all. My daughter owes me big time. Her father wanted to name her Oklahoma Gale instead of Linda Gail. I prevailed.

And her nickname would have been? Okie? A close call.

I don't know who I think is sillier: the parents for picking that name or the judge for saying that. I'm tired of all the goofy names people are bestowing on their poor children these days.

People are using odd names to point out how avante garde they are and how special their children are. It's just an attention-getter. BUt I don't think that is what was going on here. These people just like the sound of it. And this judge was just over the top with her religious mandate.

Yes -- There are better name cases to waste court time on. For instance, I wish someone would block the rap singer "50 Cent" from using that name publicly -- until he makes it plural, like a decent American would.

Poor "50 Cent" is only worth half that, due to inflation. He ought to be re-named "Two Bit."
