Primary Madness

Sarah Palin has challenged President Obama to a debate. She surely has a distorted view of her importance nationally. Why would any president agree to a debate with such a nonentity.

I saw the movie Game Change. I enjoyed it and did learn some things I didn’t know before. Steve Schmidt, McCain’s campaign manager, played in the movie by Woody Harrelson, has been on talk shows verifying the events in the movie. One of the most bizarre is that Palin expected to give her own concession speech after Obama won. She was told no by Schmidt, who informed her that only the presidential candiate concedes and it was "ever thus" and that the night wasn't "about you". Then she went over his head to McCain, who also said no, although with a good deal more grace because he hates to hurt people’s feelings. (Except, of course, for his first wife, whom he left after a car accident disfigured her, and married his younger, richer mistress.)

There are continued debates about how close the national election will be in November and the consensus is “very close” and I am wondering if they’ve got it wrong because are they forgetting how angry women are? I hope I am right in this.

Rush Limbaugh, meanwhile, has done the Democrats a great service by being so obviously despicable and obsessive about Sandra Fluke, the undergraduate he labeled a slut and a prostitute for seeking to have women’s health care continue to include contraception. Many advertisers have dropped the show and affiliates are also dropping him. Some stations will continue but they are owned by his bosses, Clear Channel. I was surprised to learn that Girl Scouts of America, who dropped their ads, were one of his sponsors. Good grief. What insanity is that? What organization dedicated to raising healthy young minds would seek to advertise on such a show? Are they nuts? I wrote them about it.

About Romney and his dog. This incident where he spoke of transporting his dog on a long trip in a cage on the roof of his car graphically illustrates not that Romney hates dogs, but that he is missing the empathy button – he can’t put himself in anyone else’s place. It’s a sociopathic trait. I would never transport any animal in a way where I could not monitor his condition on the road – is he hungry, thirsty, comfortable, lonely, holding his water, in any trouble at all, etc. Romney doesn’t know how to connect and I am also wondering about his marriage at this point.

Romney’s son, incidentally, was in Hawaii (Obama country for sure) and said on camera that he thought Obama “was great”. Was this political because he was in Hawaii, or does he really think so? In any case, I’ll bet his dad and handlers went ape.

I just signed another petition on abortion rights – choosing, of course, all the progressive-liberal positions, and they have a link to Facebook, so I clicked on that. The poll results all favor my positions. You’d have to be a Karen Santorum to vote any other way.

I have been wondering, since Rick Santorum believes sex should only be indulged in if you want to procreate, whether he and Karen will stop having relations now that she presumably is past child-bearing age. (Does she know this, or is she twisting slowly in the wind?) Totally ignoring the possible consequence of her pregnancy in her 50s,they went ahead and had that “change of life” baby and their infant daughter has a genetic disease and may never grow to adulthood. They thought more of their “moral” convictions than of the awful life this baby would lead if they went ahead. Perhaps they look at each other and say, "Look, the veggie is smiling, choke."

I am hoping the poll results will translate into votes for Obama nationwide. It’s time for the war against women to be put in its place. I think the push for regressive mandates about choice, contraception, and ultrasounds have nothing to do with religious freedom and everything to do with reducing the independence of women as they are achieving more and more in life. Women’s participation in all the advantages of an autonomous life is threatening to many conservative minds. Conservative women who buy into this, I am thinking, do not have the talent or ambition to do more than “serve” in the traditional way, and do not want to be outshown by their more talented and assertive sisters.

I think Santorum’s moral choices are at least, in part, dictated by his male hubris. He doesn’t see it that way, of course, being totally self-delusional. Let’s get him to see the light.

xx, Teal

I received a robocall last night that was so offensive that I felt like disinfecting my phone. It was from a group called Jews and Christians Together, bashing Romney and pushing Santorum. So vile and disgusting. Those people should be ashamed of themselves. They have been calling Rep, Dem and Ind alike.

The Jews I know (and I married a Jew) despise the effort by the evangelical Christians to co-opt them. They are happy being as they are. Any Jew joining such a group is dysfunctional. My husband, though he defends the teachings is virtually secular. I personally feel that ALL ills of the world can be traced to fundamental religionists -- muslims, evangelicals, Catholics (remember the Inquisition) there is NO difference.
The religious devout put themselves above everyone else and go to any lengths to have their way.

I like Schmidt. He's one of the few "good" Republicans. Enjoyed the rest of your political info.

As we used to say, Right on! We are regressing in so many areas. The young women don't know who Gloria Steinem is and what she has done for us. Romney and Santorum are in my neighborhood this week. I am sick to death of the robocalls, inviting me to this or that rally. They are really going after the independent vote.

See my reply to Great Martin. I believe that this attack on our reproductive rights and the effort to humiliate women is a clandestine effort masked as moral and in defense of religion to reduce women's rising role in business and the political arena. The base of the Republican party harbors a fear of successful women. Santorum did us a favor because younger women are finally "getting it" that in order to keep our gains, we have to exert constant vigilance.

I am so with you on all of this. My worst nightmare is Romney as President
and Santorum as Vice President.

Oh, and Sarah Palin? (Sound of retching) Obama may as well debate PeeWee Herman, it would be as meaningful.

That dog-on-car story is so sad it causes me pain each time I think of it. Each one of these guys has some perfectly awful things in their headlines. I just keep going to Google "Santorum" as often as I think of it, and make sure I click on the disgusting results, never the candidate's pages, in order to maintain the high ranking of the Dan Savage site.

The war against women will never stop because women are too powerful (sadly they don't band together!) and men being afraid of them have to keep them at each others throats

We banded together in the 60s, mostly for removing the glass ceiling in business, and equal pay. The thing is, and this is true of every meaningful issue, that new generations coming up don't know they have to keep fighting to stay in the same place. They don't want to hear how "we" did it, because they think the issues have been settled. So long as you have the devout out there seeking to remake everyone in their image, sexual matters will always be under attack. Santorum did us a favor. He reignited what brings us together. Watch.

"Dogs against Romney" now has almost 40,000 likes on fb. LOL No laughing matter, really, but it does bring 40,000 anti-Romney people together. I thought the same about Palin... Hell... where do these people get the nerve... maybe she should challenge Al Sharpton. That would be interesting--no winner, but good entertainment.

Sharpton has evolved since his days as a New York City demagogue and the Tawana Brawley mess. He lost weight too.

I am picturing that old wood-panel station wagon whizzing along the interstate with a dog crate on top. Occupied or not, it wouldn't be very aerodynamic, and it'd take a lot of bungie cords to keep it from blowing off. It shows poor judgment, back in 1983, and Romney had to figure out to get 5 kids, a wife, and an Irish setter from Massachusetts to Ontario, Canada in a station wagon. I'm sure the kids insisted the dog had to come. He should plead temporary insanity, the rashness of a 30-something alpha male driven to take desperate measures.
