Local Doings and a TV Critique
Every year the locals put on a mango festival. It is held at the German Club that also has a Bavarian Gardens Restaurant but Ed and I have not eaten there. We have heard that it isn’t very good. Anyway, people show up to buy various mango products from outdoor booths -- mango jam, jelly, pie, salad, preserves, mango-viagra (just kidding).
I went next door and bummed two mangos off my neighbor who now owns our former house/tree. He isn’t that keen on mangos and doesn’t mind if we take them.
I spent part of last week od’g on NCIS re-runs on a cable channel that ran them all day. There is so very little good programming in the summer that one gets desperate.
I am again reminded of how Abby, a character on that program who is an absolute genius at forensics and used to be reasonably adult is now portrayed as an infantile nitwit. Interesting combination of qualities – aces scientist, idiot child. I guess it’s working because they keep doing it.
Years ago I used to watch “Matlockâ€, a lawyer series starring the older Andy Griffith. Early in the series his contact with women led you to believe he was a competent male. Later, some lamebrain writers got the idea that, even though he was a hard-nosed investigator, he should be a total fool when a woman was interested in him, all thumbs, and shucks, ma’am. After I was widowed I dated a journalist who looked a lot like Andy did in this series and he also came from the Midwest and grew up in an old boy culture that he retained some of while at the same time gaining a world sophistication from his career. He was no fool. So I didn’t appreciate this switch in affect.
Anyway, them’s me thoughts.
Here’s an old boy tale Jay told me. It stays with me.
A fellow stole some money and years later he put some money in an envelope and sent it to his victim with a note … “Remors is gnorin’ at me vitals. When it gnors again, I’ll send more.â€
