The Latest from the Right

There was just a news item on about the Right’s push for a new law that would not only outlaw all abortion, but also a “morning after” pill. It reinforces my perception that these people are not out to save fetuses, but are determined to remove all free will regarding sex in a kind of sick morality control-freak mindset.

And the movement’s spokeswoman was saying how there are “millions of couples” out there willing to adopt babies so why are we killing them when all these happy, well-adjusted, solvent homes are clamoring for children?

Well, if we are going to go in that direction, I would also make it mandatory that any prospective adoptive parents must first deplete the disadvantaged baby population. This means crack babies, warehoused and neglected, Down’s syndrome babies (with incentives for choosing one of these such as a tax break) and, of course, minority babies.

Healthier babies might be available through a lottery that one could participate in only after an extremely rigorous vetting process.

That would, I think, seriously daunt the “save every fetus” mentality that obsesses the Right. I don’t see them lining up to save the warehoused babies no one wants, the ones who grow up emotionally damaged from conditions that are guaranteed to ruin them for life. The Right’s position on abortion is “let’s you and them suffer immeasurably because our moral high ground is more important than anything else.”

If there were indeed a Jesus, I would think he’d send to Hell first all the morally superior humans who prize their personal agendas over humanity.

I remember back in the 1960, folk singer Phil Ochs wrote a Civil Rights song about the State of Mississippi, and the line this makes me think of is: "Mississippi, go find another country to be part of." Poorest people in the USA, rottenest educational system. Swing a cat down there, hit six people who can't read. I find their unquestioning dependence on others to do their thinking for them repugnant. The ones who get an education get the heck out.

The legal implications make the mind reel with possibilities: Would the folks there have to back-date their birthdays nine months? Will gametes need a Social Security card? If there is a spontaneous abortion, as happens in a VERY HIGH percentage of pregnancies, will the woman who loses her baby be charged with infanticide? Is the Fetus considered another tax deduction from the moment of conception? Can an unborn child collect food stamps so mother can eat right? And I didn't even have to stop and think hard!

all of the above -- good list. I once advocated counseling for the fetus (at an editorial meeting -- got a laugh out of them).

Yes, deplete the disadvantaged baby population. I wonder if it would be so horrible to put adoptable kids' images somewhere to see, or their stories, or something. My god, we do that for pets, and they've acquired a league of champions for their protection and adoption like never before.

As you say, those 'milliions of couples' do not want just any babies, they want perfect, white infants whose mothers were pure as the driven snow and fathers were Ivy League-bound.

We now know Mississippi rejected the issue. Hurray for common sense. There is hope. Same with Ohio voters.

I watched this with horror. Why would anyone think the world should be
over populated and the babies suffer from being unwanted. Once you have an
extended family you are a hostage to fortune. The more you have, the more
you worry about. Now I have to worry about Owen. They want every woman to
be a child bearing vessel but I can tell you right now that not every woman
is cut out to be a mother and should be allowed to make that choice. They
are silly sick religious fools! It would also be a blow to those women who
long for children and can now have in vetreo (?) fertilization. It denies
those women the right to choose to be mothers because some of the extra eggs would be discarded. Good Gracious Susil write some letters to the
editor.

It's more like and initiative than a law. If it should pass, it will be up to the legislature and the courts to implement it. The good news is that the process would take some time. The bad news is that people think like that to begin with. Unreal!

Mississippi may think it can overthrow the US Constitution, but if the law down there passes, it will be challenged in court and the US Supreme Court ruling in Roe vs. Wade supersedes and state law. Waste of money to even put it on a ballot.

If the new Mississippi law passes there goes Roe & Wade--women can't have an abortion UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!!! They are fighting for 'conception' to start when the egg says hello to the sperm and that makes it a viable human being!!
