Another Kitty?

Ed and I drove to a local animal shelter on Pine Island today. We were naturally drawn to the cats who looked like Brunswick, but here is the problem. There were many really friendly kitties there. Some had long hair that I want to avoid. Some had fiv (feline immune-deficiency virus) that can lead to leukemia. Sweet as some of these were, we are not emotionally ready to have a kitty who might become seriously ill sooner, rather than later. Some really lovely cats were already 13 or 14. We have lost all of our cats by age 14.

Many were eager to know us and it was hard to turn any away. We were so conflicted, we left without deciding. I wanted them all. So we left without choosing. But later Ed said he was partial to going back to get an orange fellow, about 5, who is called Puddles. They are all needy, they all need homes. It was an emotional experience.

We came home and I walked John’s dog, Buster. John, my friend from the neighborhood, is going in for a pacemaker soon and doesn’t have the energy to walk him so I will be doing that for a while.

xx, Teal

Ed was firm that he wanted no more kitties because of the pain at losing them. We've lost four. They were all special, but Brunswick, somehow, was the hardest. Or maybe I'm just forgetting how painful the other losses were. Then Ed decided he wanted, after all, to find another. Now he's vacillating again. There is work involved and there is daily fretting when they disappear and I am not one to assume all is well until I locate them. I had three until August when Chewy died of cancer. And we euthanized Brunswick this past May. It was excruciating. I used to count cats before going to bed and spend an hour looking until I found them all. I'm a basket case.

Maybe you should find out why they named that cat Puddles before you take him home.

it had something to do with rain -- but Ed decided not to pursue. I am ambivalent.

I do hope you go back to get Puddles. If Ed left there thinking about him, there is a connection. Hope to hear you have a new family member soon!

Ed has changed his mind again. I don't know what I want to do. I am more tired than I used to be and animals need a lot of care. I'm kind of giving Ed the lead on this one. If he really wants another kitty, I'll agree, then the worrying will start again. I'm sad a lot because of Brunswick -- he's always in the back of my mind. I want to feel whole again and each loss takes more out of me so I am not at all sure I want to put myself through that in another few years when I am even less resilient. We'll see.

I like the name "Puddles."

Dear Teal,
It was so nice to meet you and Ed. I liked you two lovey people! I hope you will come back to get me. I send you headbonks until I see you again.
Love,
Puddles

Puddles is a great name, but sounds more like a puppy that isn't house-trained yet. I can't remember what Eloise's name was when she came here - I'll have to look it up sometime. After several days of living here, she TOLD me Eloise is the name she wanted.

It was mentioned that the name referred to the cat liking to walk in rain puddles. But I would change it anyway. Still haven't acted. I am not feeling energetic and a new animal takes effort and that has a bearing on my not pushing to go get him. Ed also hasn't refocused on that.

This is why I don't have a dog yet -- it's agonizing to decide. At least all the cats you met are in a stable place with food and care and if it's like places here, have the community of the other cats frequently. Not to mention the attention of all the humans who care for them. I like the name Puddles for a cat.

My China lived to be seventeen before she became ill. A five year old
should suit you very well. In the meantime, it is probably fun to walk
Buster for your friend.
