Kitchen Chaos

There are times when I should not be allowed near anything breakable. It was such a night last night when I started to prepare dinner – I made bow-tie pasta with Barilla red sauce and I put in minced onion, mushrooms, clams from a can, and fresh shrimp that I personally cleaned and deveined with the little shrimp thingy. It works nicely.

I bought the shrimp at The Olde Fish House Marina and it is from our very own Gulf waters. I also got two lane snappers that the fellow who waited on me said he had caught himself last night – very fresh. Mostly he fishes for the shop but was filling in at the counter. He said I should sprinkle them generously with sea salt and bake them for 16 minutes.

I am using olive oil that I keep in a former mayonnaise jar and the top has gotten hard to thread and it slipped out of my nerveless grasp and fell on the floor and got on everything, but at least the glass did not break. I am using the mayonnaise jar because a re-used store-bought olive oil container broke in similar fashion about a year ago. Maybe this is the anniversary. So I cleaned things, and stuck my crocs into a bucket of Pine Sol and hot water because I didn’t want to track oil everywhere. And oil got on my shorts as well. Then I got the Swiffer mop and also had to help things along by wiping with paper towel (yeah, I know, big footprint).

I continued with the dinner prep and decided to find a better container for the olive oil (I fill it from a gallon size I buy at BJ’s). There was a jar waiting to be rinsed – it had red horse radish in it that Ed likes. A bit smaller but I thought it would do so I picked it up quickly and it slipped out of my nerveless grasp, crashed and broke and I got red horse radish sauce on the cabinets and floor. I went through the whole clean-up routine again.

Meanwhile, in case you are wondering, Ed heard the crashes and the gentle goshes, gee whizzes, and oh mys emanating from his wife and did not ask what was going on but continued to read his book. I let him be because I am a saint.

The sauce turned out nicely and I think I gained half a pound . Winning is not allowed.

xx, Teal

I'm afraid my remarks would have been a little stronger than "Gee whiz" and "oh my!", especially, on the second spill. And you are a saint for not insisting that Mr. Ed not come to your aid if he wanted dinner. I would NOT have been so forgiving.

Well that description was tongue in cheek. Actually a few $%$% remarks slipped in.

Sounds like a lovely sauce you were making there. Maybe this is your year's worth of mishaps all in one dose.

I have had those rotten days!

The food sounds good, but you may need a couple pieces of rubber they sell in places like BedBath&Beyond that you can put under a cell phone on the dash of your car, or on a table under a laptop to keep it from sliding. Stick them to the jar or bottle you're about to pick up. ... my hands have the beginnings of osteoarthritis so I don't grip with my thumb hard, since it hurts. I drop stuff too.

I am having thumb problems, right hand a trigger thumb, won't bend without a snap. I was advised by a doctor I was seeing for something else to get a cortisone shot or it would just get worse. I made an appointment and will have that done next week. Look into it. I need to use a glass container (I won't use plastic since I've heard degrading plastic leaks into the contents) that is more reliable. Thanks for your thoughts.

Right, glass is nasty.Try like jon said metal or plastic.
Be careful.

Lots of plastic should not be reused. I will look into metal or a more easily handled glass.

Glass is nasty. I look for metal and plastic now, as I am a butter-fingered person. More about the shrimp de-veiner???

Hiyo, I have read so much about plastic leaching into the contents as bottles get old, that I stick to glass. I might try looking for metal though. I will have to post a photo of the shrimp sheller/deveiner or you can Google cleaning shrimp and in at least some of the sites, you will see the tool. Some chefs just use a small knife. It is a curved plastic tool with a narrow end that is slipped under the shell, follows the curve of the shrimp and twists the shell off and you can use the tip to clean out any guh that isn't removed. Any good super market should have in their gadget aisle. About $1.95.

I gave up buying gallon cans of olive oil for this exact reason. But I too save good glass jars and reuse them. I had a tussle with a balky lid on a jar of olives yesterday, but solved it with my supply of tacky cabinet liner remnants which I keep handy in a kitchen drawer. Place one on the counter to secure the jar from turning and sliding, and then one on the lid for a secure turning grip and extra torque. Try it, dear T.
