Coffee War

BJ’s discount store that we belong to, has discontinued a wonderful coffee they were offering – Executive Choice. They are offering in its place a proprietary band they call Arabica. I bought it in desperation because I was running out of coffee. It is slightly bitter, less flavorful, and not as strong.

I sent an E mail and complained. More than a week passed with no response so I called the company and got a rep who told me they had discontinued Executive Choice, no explanation, an unsatisfying conversation.

I was in the process of writing one of my graceful fulminations to the corporate headquarters, when I got a call from another rep named “Karen”, no last name. I didn’t press the point. She said Executive Choice is one of the BJ brands and that they are just repackaging it and it is the same coffee.

Au contraire I said. It smells different coming out of the package, it has a slightly bitter taste, that Executive Choice does not, it is less flavorful, and it is not as strong per measure. The first rep, moreover, I informed her, didn’t say anything about Arabica being the same coffee. Or maybe he wasn’t in the room when they talked about this change, being a lowly sort who has to answer phones and talk to customers.

She was surprised to hear what I had to say and said she would report what I said to her management God. I said the producer of the coffee you are doing business with may be pulling a fast one.

I also said I had talked with someone at Executive Choice out in California and they were willing to research a price for me as an individual consumer, assuming I bought a decent quantity. She said it wasn’t the same company. How weird. The fellow I talked with let me assume it was.

Meanwhile, I have a box of coffee that will last for the next three months. Karen said why didn’t I try their organic brand in the bean that was getting raves. I said life was too short to be grinding beans every day.

Let’s see what happens next.

Meanwhile, I used more Arabica and less water this morning. When it tried to climb out of the pot, I decided I could drink it.

xx, Teal

For a good Dark Roast without bitterness, I recommend you overlook the fact that it bears the Starbucks name and give their Italian Roast a try. I find it less beastly expensive in their coffee shops, and they will grind to suit.

The charm of Executive Choice at BJ's was not only that it was a coffee I loved and all my guests exclaimed over, but that it was less than $4 a lb. I know I can get good coffee -- Gevalia is one ($14), Brown Gold in the market is $7.03 and excellent and I was drinking that before I discovered the BJ's brand. Well, I guess the free ride is over. Hey, thanks for stopping by.

You might just ask that Executive Choice you spoke with in CA to send you a sample of their coffee. Your senses seem to be the best truthtellers here; that first lady may be entirely misinformed by her own employers. Great detective work on your part.

Yes, research is my middle name, especially when I am annoyed. I don't think I'll be hearing from the California outfit -- no word yet and it would not be unusual for a mfr to decide an individual consumer trying to buy wholesale isn't worth the trouble. Thanks for stopping by.

Long coffee story cut short: I can tell what kind of coffee it is by chewing the roasted bean. believe me. No sh*t. If your taste buds say it is a different beast, then it IS a different beast.

I have consumed so much coffee in my lifetime I wouldn't know one brand from another. Darkness and strength are two of the benchmarks I go by with the coffee I drink

both of the coffees I mentioned are "100%" Colombian, but one is still better than the other.

I like dark roast coffee, and like you, dear T, will object to high heaven when the powers that be mess around with my favorite brew. But they do, sometimes when they change growers, or roasters, and then the hunt begins anew to find a new supplier or brand. [Sigh.}

that sounds like some good coffee! I like my coffee strong but not bitter. every once in a while I will splurge and buy a bag of seattle's best coffee.

The only coffee that I can't drink is chicory coffee in Louisiana. I like
it sans cream and sugar and black coffee with chicory in it is too too strong. Hope you get the brand you like...coffee is one of the sweet little
pleasures.

I don't like chicory either. I checked out the price of Brown Gold, one of the better market coffees, at Publix yesterday. I used to buy it before joining BJ's. $7.03 a pound. Sheesh.

I was srerved coffee that "tried to climb out of the pot" at a few of the B&Bs back East.<--- That's a yuck.

Not everyone likes strong coffee, Ms. Nitti. That's a mystery to moi.
