Our Animals

We seem to be a blog where cat lovers abound. A few years ago, Ed and I used to stop by an outdoor produce market – the field behind was planted with their stuff so you could pick things off the vine if you wanted. The market had a 24-hour resident cat. I forget her name. Then came Charlie, the monster hurricane.

Some time later after repairs and whatnot, they reopened but kitty was not there. Where is she, we wanted to know. Ed always looked for her so he could give her an “earie”. They explained that they had taken her home with them to ride out the storm and once they were able to return to business as usual, the cat wouldn’t get into the car. Guess what? Kitty had discovered air-conditioning. That is one smart kitty. So the owners let her become a house cat. Good people.

I love dogs a lot too, of course, but walking them is a problem and Ed is rarely available for this. Not to mention, that Chewy and Max would have a problem. Not Brunswick, who seems to love every other living creature and is eager to make friends. So we don’t have a dog. I make up for it by loving all the dogs on the island. Most of them respond.

However, there are two badly trained small dogs a few doors down, who bark incessantly at everyone and everything. They don’t really look like dogs, more like spiders. I wonder at people who think it is okay to let a dog go untrained. I also find it hard to bond to a spider-looking dog who never stops barking.

I'm so glad the cat came out alright! I'm with you about untrained dogs. Some people shouldn't have them cuz they don't know what to do with them. We have some barkers next door. When we first moved here I couldn't even go outside to enjoy my own yard because of them. I guess they got used to me.

There are six dogs (other than than the tiny barkers) in the houses adjacent to ours. They are all allowed out in the morning without supervision. They poop on various lawns. Ed periodically becomes enraged because he mows and has to deal with the poop. I am very fond of these dogs; they are all super friendly and joyous and come up to get tummy rubs. Their people, however, are careless and that is a problem. But it is what it is. One dog slipped into our garage when I wasn't looking and I lowered the door and then his guy showed up and said "Gus is in your garage." I love Gus totally. it wasn't a problem.

I thought cats were independent!!! Dogs and birds take a lot of attention.

Do you consider yourself independent? Do you, as well, need love? That's a cat. They're just not as mushy about it.

Until four years ago,we always had at least one dog. Now we have a cat. We are still dog people but Dudley does have his moments. I would love to have another bulldog but dogs have to have someone around to take them out.

Dudley Cat. I like it. It would be great to have a dog. Just too much work for us at this stage.

You have me wondering what kind of dogs look like spiders. I love both cats
and dogs. Rex, because of his l22 pound heft is all I can handle right now
but I have a favorite neighborhood cat to visit with.

I'll have to ask Jackie, who owns the dogs. They are, I think chihuahua mixes.

No need of this. All dogs need proper training.Very simple.

My brother-in-law once had a bookstore/newspaper stand on the main street in Tallahassee named The Black Cat. He had two black store cats that had the run of the place and could often be spotted snoozing upon a pile of magazines or watching the sidewalk parade of pedestrians.

Store animals can lead happy lives so long as they get some affection. I still remember Mitzi, the cat that belonged to the drugstore of my childhood. She was a grey and white. I grew up in that drugstore -- it was family owned and the three grown children of the owners were my friends as I grew to adulthood.

I'm a dog and bird person--I love to watch cats of any size--their movements are mesmerizing but as a pet--no.

You probably just don't like to care of them and they do need attention.

That's a great story about the market cat. We used to frequent a used bookstore near Orlando that had three resident cats: Fee, Foo, and Stuffy. They were the highlight of our annual visit to that area.

What charming names. In those days were you visiting in Florida, or living here?
