What in the World?

Today's newspaper is full of "downers". I could choose to be depressed, but I'll fight the mood.

First, there is the Norway slaughter. I am so sickened and saddened by that tragedy, I can hardly stand it. One never becomes immune to that sort of thing.

Somalia is close behind. Reading and seeing those poor innocent children suffer from starvation upsets me to no end.

Our local news is equally depressing: a beaten, dead child; a missing IU student; a rape of a 9 year old; heat death of a fireman, etc., etc. "T'was ever thus", I know. But it doesn't make it any easier to swallow.

Republican congressmen and the federal default crisis. Are they out of their friggin' minds? What makes people think the way they do? How can they ignore the profits big corporations are making without paying their fair share of taxes? And cut medicare and SS????????? Give me a break.

I could go on (and on and on--heat wave, coal fired plants in Indiana causing great pollution, coons in my sweet corn), but I'll just get madder and madder. What can one do? I need to spend a day with Martin, Mr. "Happy-go-Lucky"!

Sigh. I know. Really looking at this world makes one want to dig a hole and hide out for a long long time...

Too much of the news is the bad stuff. I mostly watch it for the weather and anything local. I don't dwell on the bad stuff and focus on the good stuff - like how good my yard looks when the grass is mowed, how soft chicken feathers and fluffy kittens are, how well my 3 yr old pony behaved in his training session today, how good it feels to sleep when you are tired.

I like your attitude! I really try to stay upbeat and think positive thoughts. But it's always something. Nice to hear from you. I was wondering.

You were never out of my good graces. Just too much sadness in my life just now, Randy. This post just added to it....

The U.S. political system is as broken and tired as is its reputation and influence overseas. We need to start over.
comment by jondude on July 23, 2011 4:13 PM ()
There's still hope. But we have to re-elect Obama. And dump a Republican dominated Congress.

I agree with Eddie.

A four word reply? New record!! I agree, too.

(((((((((((((((((Randy)))))))))))))))))))

I haven't owned a TV for close to ten years now, and rarely read the newspaper, I listen to Democracy Now 5x a week and the local news on the radio. Some days, I just turn it off....

Being a Social Worker, I see, feel, hear way too much of the realities of our lives in 2011....Parker gets going pretty easily about the injustices in the world just like I can...but I choose to act locally and in my state of California. My power is in what I spend MY money on. We have to laugh daily, I mean belly laughs or we will all fill bathtubs full of tears and anger that can literally skew us and kill us!!!

Dig in your garden, go for a run, eat some fresh fruit and veggies....all the kindness we possibly can show to OTHERS on a daily basis is vital in our world!!! My long time motto has been, do all the good you can, as often as you can and do random acts of kindness for complete strangers.

The power of a smile is life changing for some folks....I go out of my way to help others, it's just my nature...and it is easy and usually FREE!!! I know how sick and twisted humans can be, but I know I make a difference every day!!! Keep your chin up and shake the blues away...kinda like when we were little and we had to shake our wiggles out!!! Sending you and all of our mybloggers land friends lots of love and laughter!!! Barb

As always, I love your attitude, Barb! Upbeat, positive, hopeful. I take it to heart. Keep in touch.

I dare not watch the news right now. I have enough just dealing with myself right now.
comment by dragonflyby on July 23, 2011 11:53 AM ()
I know I couldn't watch the part about the Norway slaughter. I hate to be a "head in the sand" type person, but I just can't hack such gruesome events. If you ever need to "unload", email me (jazzman@geetel.net).
reply by solitaire on July 24, 2011 6:38 AM ()
and now you know why I don't watch the news.
comment by nittineedles on July 23, 2011 11:27 AM ()
Not when you can get it from me! I'll try to be more positive next time.

Write to your congressman.
comment by fredo on July 23, 2011 10:23 AM ()
I don't know whether you're serious or not. If I "followed up" on all the requests to "urge" my congressmen to do (or not do) something, I'd be spending hours writing letters. No thanks. I'll let my vote tell them.
reply by solitaire on July 24, 2011 6:31 AM ()
I get cynical sometimes and think lets make contraceptives available to
to third world countries and preach to them about limiting the number of
children that they bring into a world so filled with misery and hunger.
It wouldn't work. I had a friend who had nine children and her story is
"I take what God sends me"
Martin is right. Let us help who we can in our daily lives and do random
acts of kindness when we have the opportunity. I was at Aldi's and told
the oriental man behind me to go ahead of me because he just had a few
things. He refused and started helping me unload my basket after saying
"May I" that was so sweet. Sometimes letting someone have the pleasure
of helping you is a kindness.
comment by elderjane on July 23, 2011 8:41 AM ()
I appreciate and agree with yours and Martin's attitudes. Perhaps I'm too cynical to see if it makes much difference in alleviating the "problems with mankind". (I think your reply below was meant for someone else, but I responded in a way.)
reply by solitaire on July 24, 2011 6:29 AM ()
I am doing my fair share of e mailing. We do need to flood them with our
anger. This is our country and they are being stupid egotistical fools.
comment by elderjane on July 23, 2011 8:32 AM ()
Emailing whom? Besides, I've got my own worries.

Does this mean I'm back in your good graces (assuming I was out)?

Randy, it isn't easy but except for local news at night when I am working on my computer and the morning paper with coffee (and remembering the cigarette I use to have with it)I very seldom pay attention to the news because I know how depressing it is--yes I hear all that's going on but sort of second hand so the impact isn't as hard--the thing that really saves me is the 'job' I have--volunteering with teenagers with AIDS--seeing that they have basic needs, get to doctors, take their medicines, being optimistic for them--I work as hard as I can to get, and keep smiles, on their faces and there is no way I can tell them look at what you have ahead of you if you survive--they already know about hateful adults, lousy parents, people killing, robbing and taking advantage of others--now you got me depressed just thinking about our stupid politicians!! Have an 1/2 hour to get back to my 'happy go lucky' personality after your depressing blog!
comment by greatmartin on July 23, 2011 8:10 AM ()
Years ago, I saw a TV commercial where teenagers at the beach were listening to radio music. When "the news" came on, they switched channels.
That had an impact on me. I don't want to "tune out", but it's depressing tuning in. Hope you're feeling more like yourself!
reply by solitaire on July 24, 2011 6:21 AM ()
I think all Americans should pay the same tax rate regardless of income. If you make a million a year...pay 20% or so with no deductions. If you make 10,000 a year...pay 20% with no deductions. Now that is common sense!
comment by eddie on July 23, 2011 7:36 AM ()
This may be a first--a reply from you! But you know, I agree 100%. Why do we have to make things so complicated? (I see post material)
reply by solitaire on July 24, 2011 6:17 AM ()
Really? I did not think this was a liberal position. Where everyone pays the same rate as a percentage of their earnings. I thought the liberal position was to soak the "wealthy" for the benefit of the non-tax paying "poor".
reply by eddie on July 23, 2011 1:36 PM ()
Hear! Hear! Careful, Eddie. You are starting to sound like us 'liberals'!
reply by dragonflyby on July 23, 2011 11:52 AM ()
I just sent an E mail to the local paper about the debt crisis, another one of my pithy rants. I'll let you all know if they print it. I am compartmentalizing all the tragedies. If I don't, I won't make it through.
comment by tealstar on July 23, 2011 7:33 AM ()
Good for you. I'm an infrequent "letter to the editor" guy. I have to be severely rankled. It usually rebuts the long-standing belief that "our nation was founded on Christianity". Grrrr.
reply by solitaire on July 24, 2011 6:14 AM ()
I, too, do the 'letter' to the editor BUT right now we have to flood our politicians to stop grand standing, 'walking out' and get our crisis taken care of now and not wait for the last minute!!
