"We hold these truths to be self-evident" (Declaration of Rights from the Declaration of Independence).
What is "truth"? That is the question.
My dictionary has three definitions: 1) the quality or state of being true (with 5 specifications added); 2) that which is true--a fact or reality; 3) a verified fact, a true statement, an e stablished principle, a fixed law.
I'm writing about this because my ear (for some reason) has been tuned into the word. I seem to hear it all the time, as in: "The truth of the matter is...", or "In truth....". Variations include substituting the word fact for truth.
Now we have a difference in "absolute truth" (A rabbit runs faster than a tortoise.) and "the spirit of truth" (Be true to yourself.). The problem arises in that they are frequently confused.
Ministers/Preachers (and most "believers") bandy about "the truth" as if it were "The Truth". ("Christ has risen from the dead".) In their minds, it IS the latter. Of course, we really don't know. Now we're in the realm of a belief being confused with the truth.
Politicians and Fox commentators do this all the time. Being "high and mighty", as they and their gullible followers presume they are, these people espouse all sorts of garbage under the guise of including the phrase "the truth of the matter is...". If they say it, it must be true. Be wary when you hear this.
It is said that "the truth shall set you free". I don't really know what that means. But the question remains, what do we mean by truth? Is it, indeed, a fact?
