Sunday in the Woods

Albeit very windy, Sunday was a good day to be outdoors. It may be the last of our really warm days. It's snowing (flurries) this Monday morning! What a difference a day makes.

Anyway, I took advantage of the nice weather and spent much of the day in the woods (out of the wind). I hiked around and cut a load of firewood. My daughter and grandson helped me, as they were there while Nate was working on their barns (being constructed).

The tree I was cutting on was a former "widow maker"--dead, but caught up in another tree. It finally fell this past summer. Honeybees had made it a home, and honey was leaking out on the ground. It tasted delicious! We told a bee keeper about it, but by the time he got around to checking it out, they abandoned the hive.

When I cut the tree (hickory) up, it was quite hollow inside, and filled with dried up honeycombs. It was a huge colony! I felt bad for the bees that had to "jump ship". Hopefully, they found a new home somewhere nearby. Feral bees are very rare. (My SIL has bee hives for his vegetable farm.)

By the way, all this wood I'm cutting now is for winter 2013-14. I like to be a year ahead, just in case I become unable to cut it for some unknown reason(s). The golf course is going to cut down about 30 trees this winter, and I can have them! I'll be two years ahead then!

Have a good week, you'all.

Cutting down 30 trees??!! Whassup?

I guess they think they're unnecessary, especially since they interfere with mowing. Some are fence row trees that hang over the fairway too much. I'm just waiting for that phone call.

I did not realize there was a distinction between feral bees and "domestic" (?) bees. I thought bees were bees- except here in Florida, we are being invaded by those dang African bees. They breed with the local bees and the result is a nasty, aggressive hive.

You can keep your nasty bees. But yes, most bees nowadays are "boxed" by bee keepers. One told me there were no feral bees, but I silently disagreed, since I've seen them in the wilds, including a hive in my catalpa tree.

I still regret not putting in a fireplace when we built our house. But it was $1000 more and that was a lot to add to our $25800 mortgage. Yes, it was $25800.

Amazingly, when I bought my house 35 years ago, guess what it cost? $25,800!! Exactly the same. Wow!!

no, Randy, the temps down here have dipped to 30 and 40 degrees and about 3 years ago, the cold snap lasted long enough to kill thousands of fish in waters that were suddenly too cold for them, plus other wild life. And tropical fruit growers also suffered as crops died. It doesn't happen a lot, but there's another thing -- life down here in mostly warm weather, thins the blood and when we do get cool temps, we don't handle it as well as when we were up north. Hence a fireplace. It's also romantic. (We don't have one.)

I remember that winter. I had spent 2 weeks in the Florida panhandle and nearly froze to death!!
reply by solitaire on Nov 15, 2012 5:22 AM ()
No, I haven't jumped the mybloggers ship. Serious family illness and now a family death have kept me away. Too much to deal with. Heartbreaking times.

Sorry to hear this, but happy you've returned.

Thanks, Teal. Much appreciated.

so sorry to hear this Marta.

Sounds like a great way to spend the day! Good to have your year's supply of heat! Good job!

I've heated my house with wood for 35 years--to save money for starters, but now out of "habit" and challenge and exercise and being out of doors. Many reasons, in other words.

Did you keep the combs? They could probably be melted down for wax... I'm really thinking about getting bees in the spring.
comment by crazylife on Nov 12, 2012 8:37 PM ()
The combs were all dried up and papery. While honeybees aren't as plentiful as they once were, I still have them around. Wild ones, I'm guessing.

Okay "more fireplacey than thou" guys. When we need heat, we turn up the thermostat. There are fireplaces in houses down here, but it's a crapshoot because the osprey love the chimneys for their nest and the softhearted home owners never use their fireplaces because they don't want to burn out the wildlife. I love them for it.

And I can't relate to having no seasons or any number of Florida things we don't have. I'm surprised anybody would have a fireplace where you live. Mostly for show, I suppose.

Hey, Randy! Nice to check in with you. Weren't those few warm days a treat? The chill has returned here, but not so very cold yet. Love to hear of your woodpile. I adore log fires. No fireplace now, but my candles burn brightly. Take best care!
comment by marta on Nov 12, 2012 3:22 PM ()
I had thought you'd jumped ship on us. (It's always in the back of my mind.)
I wish I had a fireplace. Don't know why one wasn't added when the house was built (a hundred years ago). I can only see the fire in my wood furnace when I open its door. Hope all is well.

If you were nearby we could give you TONS of trees!
comment by kristilyn3 on Nov 12, 2012 12:12 PM ()
So I saw (no pun intended)! I'm good to go.

I wish I could find a few free trees that wouldn't take too much gas to haul home. I have the same theory about being ahead: I'm not. But I have 5 full cords on hand and it's already mid-November. I should have leftovers. Twas a nice day here yesterday too. It's clouding up already and tonight we get rain/snow. This probably the last of the 60s until spring.

I ponder the "worth" of using firewood to heat my home: gas money for one, higher electric bills to run the furnace fan is another. But, I continue to do it. One of these days, old age will stop me. I don't know what else will (except a chainsaw accident which I won't mention!).
