Summer Busys

It's been a little hectic for me lately--but in a good way.

Besides my usual routines of golf or jogging or gardening or splitting wood, I've had other matters come up, preventing me from going to "blog world".

Daughter Emily asked me to help her out at the Indianapolis (actually Carmel) Farmers Market Saturday. Nate goes to Lafayette's market. So I was up at 4 AM to drive the hour, set up, and keep the tables stocked with vegetables all morning. It was a mad house.

And so many customers are rude, nasty, and ignorant. I wanted to smack the hands of those people that would peel the corn husks back--then not buy anything. And melon thumpers and tomato handlers: pick them up, squeeze them, drop them, complain about a teeny blemish, etc. Grrr. Or soooooo slow. It's like they're buying a car or something. A long line forms behind the "fiddlers". Then they give you a twenty for a dollar pepper. Geeez Louise.

But to my daughter's credit, she was ever patient, ever pleasant, ever courteous. Who would have guessed she had a miscarriage AND ran over her dog backing out that morning?!! (He's got a broken leg)

I drove the 45 min. to their house this morning to talk to Nate and see my grandson. Stayed 3 hours. I'll spare you the details of their struggles to make a go of sustainable farming. I feel helpless.

Good news!!! I had my second date with Lynn last night (Sat)! Took her to a nice French restaurant (Bijou), wine, entree, dessert--the whole nine yards. I think she was impressed. But it was well worth the over one hundred dollars I spent. She offered to go "Dutch", but being the gentleman I am..... I told her she could buy me an elephant ear at the state fair (if we go). We're "hitting it off" rather well. I hope she likes me as much as I like her.

Have a great week.

Good luck to you and Lynn. If I lived 1000 miles closer I would be jealous. Yes, people at fruit and vegetable stands are rude! When my husband and I had a fruit stand in a mall (a kiosk), we had a sign. I don't remember the exact wording, but it had a tomato with a distressed facial expression on it that said something like, "Handle With Care-Fingers Cause Bruises!" Darn, I wish I could remember what it said. It helped!

The relationship between Lynn and me is slow going. I, for one, am being cautious (burned so many times, I've lost count). I've tossed out several "red flags", to see how she'd respond, my latest being anti-Republicans (in an email). No reply as of yet. I could never be involved with someone that doesn't share my political views. Religion is difficult enough!

I am proud of you for taking Lynn to a lovely restaurant. People can be so
rude in this heat. I almost called a nasty woman a cnt this morning which
is a horrible expletive. But she told me her dollar tip was not enough
for walking out to the car with my groceries. I complained loudly at the
Base liqueur store and got lots of courtesy and sympathy and got over it.

You're one of my inspirations, Jeri. Age is only a state of mind. After two dates, I'll begin to relax a little and "be myself". This is fun!

oh. That's what everyone else does... hmmm

Your dating life seems to be going well. But you may have to give up on your corn.

I'm not going "there" anymore.

I was just reading in today's travel section how some produce markets in Spain think it is very rude to touch the veggies and fruits--and I agree--why would I want to take home food that many other people touched?!
comment by greatmartin on July 31, 2011 7:35 PM ()
And these same people are so concerned with whether the veggie has been sprayed or not. Hand germs are much more dangerous.

Hooray for progress in the love department!

Good that you could lend Emily hand at the farmers' market — love 'em! I go to three each week. I'd always rather support small farmers than buy at a supermarket. Sorry you ran into some bozos, but they don't know what to do if produce isn't in a foam tray wrapped in plastic wrap. Uggh.

For farmers of locally grown produce everywhere, thank you. It's a struggle, but one they're willing to continue with. It's not "love" yet--not even close. But who knows.

Sending get well healing wishes to Emily's dog, too....

Assuming you're not cradle robbing, women of our generation do not expect to be paying for the meal....even if we offer to pay for it. Going dutch is OK if she suggests it and it's not at a fancy, shmancy French restaurant. If however, she insists, you must make a token objection before agreeing.
Now I'm wondering why I'm giving you advise when you're doing so well on your own.
What's an elephant's ear? Sounds gross.
comment by nittineedles on July 31, 2011 3:57 PM ()
She's two years younger than I. That's not cradle robbing, is it?
I tried to make light of paying for the meal without coming off like some rich dude tossing his money around. Never heard of elephant ears? Oh my, you haven't lived!! Huge deep fried, sugar coated batter concoction of some sort. Indescribably delicious!!!!!!!!! (And bad for you!)

wow!glad to hear the good news on your date there.Sounds great.
I for one to not pull back the husk.If I am going to buy corn then do it.
No big deal.Yes,people are rude and then they throw it back in the bin and liked to slap them. No,no you cannot do that.I am sure she find you adorable.Go for it.Does this mean your not coming this way.
True Love

Oh no--I'm still coming to N.E. in October! That's a commitment. I'm not in love yet. Just "in like"!

Peeling corn husks settles nothing. You can feel the corn kernels through the husk. I never buy an ear that has been damaged like that.

Go for the next date! Make a test some time and let her pay for the dinner. Shows character if she volunteers to do that.
comment by jondude on July 31, 2011 3:09 PM ()
"Make a test"? Meaning? I said she offered. When I told my golfing buddy, Leroy, about the cost of the date, he replied, "That ought to entitle you to some fringe benefits"! I 'bout fell over laughing!

It's hard to deal with the buying public. We are trained by supermarkets to expect perfection in vegetables, and so many folks have never seen produce as it comes from a real garden. When are they going to move and start farming on your place? Glad to hear that the course of true love is running smoothly. And I mean that more sincerely than this sounds.
comment by troutbend on July 31, 2011 3:05 PM ()
I knew you'd understand. My kids have a couple more years of "rent free" use of the farm where they're at. They COULD leave any time, but they have no house to move into. And thanks for the "sincere" words.
reply by solitaire on Aug 1, 2011 1:35 PM ()
awesome on the date!!! And I peel back the husks - that is bad? That's how I know if I want to buy the ear...
comment by kristilyn3 on July 31, 2011 3:04 PM ()
Of course it's bad! It's like using your fingernail (or knife) to cut into an apple or tomato or melon. It's not "kosher"! No no no no.
