August

Hail to Augustus. Thanks to Caesar, we have this fine month.
It's funny how the name of a month conjures up certain images.
For me, it means the end of summer vacation (for 50 of my living years). It's back to school time, as student or teacher.

The days are hot, the grass is brown, the ragweed is tall (farmers around here still call it "horseweed"). Try pulling up a weed and you'll break your back.

Speaking of which, August is when the weeds take over the garden and flower patch. It's a hopeless battle--at least for me.
But there is plenty to harvest from the garden (or buy from the farmers market). Tomatoes come to mind first. Onions, garlic, beets, carrots, Brussels sprouts, etc. are developing their goods. Patience is required. I had my first canteloupe and watermelon.

It's State Fair month, even if you don't go. It's the month of the Perseid meteor shower. It's time to sit outside after dark and watch "heat lightning" (which is actually a thunderstorm far away). And lightning bugs. And find Sirius, the Dog Star, from which we get the "dog days of August".

Grilling, iced tea, homemade ice cream, sweet corn, gnats and flies and mosquitoes-----all part of August. Enjoy!

What have I missed?

When we were kids, school didn't start until after Labor Day, so August stretched before us with the promise of more lazy summer days. Now, schools seem to start mid-month, plus there are the year-round, so August probably doesn't mean the same thing to school kids any more.

September is my favorite month. It's awakening time for everything. In New York, it is, anyway.

Sounds delightful from your description. I can't believe it's August already tho!!!

That ragweed I mentioned causes my allergies to flare up--that's not pleasant. But the rest is.

I am sweltering in l13 degree temperatures and my ode to August goes
like this: Bad cess to you and hurry up September and October.

I can only concur with Jeri. My pitiful excuse for a garden is yielding only the hardiest of fruits, and that quite scantily. HOWEVER, I can appreciate your appreciation for August in Indiana. For us Oklahomans, September is the new August.

We had like 18 straight days over 90, but that's nothing compared to you guys! Today breaks the string (88).

Things looks good for you there and glad that you are enjoying this wonderful month of August.Kids ready to go back to school and college.
Which is great for us as the traffic to the ocean will quiet down some.
A very short holidays for these kids.Goes by too fast.
We are sort of lucky here, not many mosquitoes here, lots of dragon fly and this what keep them down to a minimum. In matter of fact have not seen too many.Which is bloody good.Enjoy the rest of the day.

I'm sure August is different in other parts of the country. Two more months and I'll be in New England!

Yes, you included mosquitoes! What nuisances! Enjoy August. Another year has nearly passed.

Another "negative" for me is this is the date my mother died (Aug, 2001). I miss her smiling face.

It's another glorious month of retirement--enjoying food, movies, friends (not necessarily in that order)Mother Nature at her best and sometimes (tornadoes, hurricanes) worst, less tourists which means less traffic, high temps and humidity which makes you appreciate man's invention of a/c that more
