Hail to Augustus. Thanks to Caesar, we have this fine month.
It's funny how the name of a month conjures up certain images.
For me, it means the end of summer vacation (for 50 of my living years). It's back to school time, as student or teacher.
The days are hot, the grass is brown, the ragweed is tall (farmers around here still call it "horseweed"). Try pulling up a weed and you'll break your back.
Speaking of which, August is when the weeds take over the garden and flower patch. It's a hopeless battle--at least for me.
But there is plenty to harvest from the garden (or buy from the farmers market). Tomatoes come to mind first. Onions, garlic, beets, carrots, Brussels sprouts, etc. are developing their goods. Patience is required. I had my first canteloupe and watermelon.
It's State Fair month, even if you don't go. It's the month of the Perseid meteor shower. It's time to sit outside after dark and watch "heat lightning" (which is actually a thunderstorm far away). And lightning bugs. And find Sirius, the Dog Star, from which we get the "dog days of August".
Grilling, iced tea, homemade ice cream, sweet corn, gnats and flies and mosquitoes-----all part of August. Enjoy!
What have I missed?
