Soap Box Derby

This post is a continuation of the last two "rants and rages". I only wish I was reaching a larger audience (I don't do Facebook or twitter). But it's my "soap box" I'm on.

American wars and economic crisis are troubling enough. At our present circumstances, they alone will cause the collapse of our nation (unless something drastic is done).

But wait, there's more! We have an energy emergency that affects almost all of us. Do you drive a vehicle? Do you heat your home? Do you use electricity? Do you eat? They all use some form of energy, mostly coal, oil, and natural gas.

To watch those constant TV ads, paid for by the big oil, gas, and coal companies, you'd think the earth has an endless supply of natural resources. (And these corporations certainly have the money to advertize!) They don't want wind or solar or nuclear power to grow. "Drill, baby, drill" is their mantra. The more we have available, the cheaper the price for the consumer. And isn't that what we all want? I, like everyone else, don't like $4/gal gasoline.

But we can't ignore the inevitable consequences: eventual depletion and environmental impact (pollution and global warming). They are real--and troubling. And suicidal.

How can we continually destroy the air, land, and water we require to survive? How can we be complacent or ignorant (to blindly ignore) regarding our energy use--causes and effects? Yet, we all are part of the problem--every last one of us.
That's the world as it is.
To be continued....

Some states are funding projects for windmill 'farms' to produce energy. Converting solar power to energy is still too costly to be viable. The receptors- whatever they are called- are too costly to build. I think we are making some inroads even if they are trails and not highways.

Yes, we have windmills right up the road. Progress in small steps--and none too soon.

I do my part also but it is not enough. Everyone needs to recycle what
they can. After Japan's recent nuclear disaster, I certainly think we
should not go in that direction. Happy Father's day.

I'm in the middle of a fierce thunderstorm. If we could harness the power of lightning, we'd be all set!

Happy Father's Day! I try to do my part. I set my thermostat at 76 in summer and 72 in winter. I do not run my air conditioner in my car unless I absolutely have to. I use energy efficient light bulbs. I just don't know if people in general are THAT energy conscious though.

Every little bit helps. Still, it's the big picture I'm looking at--the future looks bleak in the energy/environmental area.

Still keeping my head in the sand...

And continue--I'm not done yet! No "fluff" for awhile.

If you are going to get up on your soap box and ask questions you better have the answers!!!!
Hey, I at least don't have a car---because I cant' afford one!
comment by greatmartin on June 19, 2011 8:47 AM ()
Rhetorical questions, my man. And I'm proud of you for not owning a car.

Nevada Power in Las Vegas recently was approved for another rate hike because consumer electricity conservation efforts had decreased NV Power's profits, which are guaranteed at a certain level. And then they got a law passed that the customers would pay billions for power lines to California that would transmit solar power generated in Nevada, but there would be no decrease in home electric bills, in fact they would go up yet again. (Fortunately and surprisingly, the governor vetoed it.) As you say, because the greedy corporations are able to spend big dollars on propaganda, we struggle to understand what is really going on.

Sounds like a crazy way to do business. I didn't realize Nevada had enough solar panels to sell energy to Calif. Hydro, yes.
