Sit Com Faves

Okay, so now that The Big Bang Theory situation comedy is showing reruns all over television, I've seen every episode several times over. It's almost addicting.

We all have different tastes--likes and dislikes-- when it comes to what we consider humorous. Here's my partial list of "All Time Favorites". Remember, these are sit-coms, in no particular order (except perhaps decade produced).

Back in the 50's, there was, of course, I Love Lucy, still in reruns. As a kid, I liked Leave it to Beaver, even Father Knows Best. I'm not sure if shows like Jack Benny and George Burns were considered "sit-coms".

I was in college from '61-'66, so I missed out on many episodes of my favorites, such as the Andy Griffith (loved Barney) and Dick Van Dyke shows. Later in that decade, I liked Sanford and Son (Red Foxx: "Elizabeth--It's the big one!), Happy Days (corny, but cute), All in the Family (but hated Archie). Never cared for the spin-offs.

The 70's was the "hayday" of sit com genius. We had perhaps my all time favorite-- MASH. Bob Newhart was funny. I'm blanking out on some other good ones during that time span. Oh, Mary Tyler Moore!

I enjoyed The Cosby Show in the 80's and beyond (I'd have to look up the actual dates). Then came Home Improvement, Frazier, Wonder Years--all cute and funny.

Many "hits" were unwatched by me for one reason or another: Cheers, Seinfeld (at first), Everybody Loves Raymond, Rozanne (ugh), Scrubs (double ugh), Friends, How I Met Your Mother, and many more.

Nowadays, the ONLY sit-com I watch is The Big Bang Theory. I might try another one, but am usually turned off. And I don't mean to offend anybody's alternate taste. I simply don't enjoy shows like 30 Rock or The Office, etc. It's probably an "old age" thing. Call me a fuddy duddy, but if I don't think it's funny, I don't watch it.
I tried to like anything Cristina Applegate was in--even Married, Without Children. Why? Her mother (Nancy Priddy) was our babysitter, back in South Bend! The Priddys lived next door.

Your turn. Have a great weekend! Hurry back Fredo!

Yes, true about the actress, Sara Gilbert, who plays Leslie Winkle. She started on the Roseanne show as a pre-teen -- very precocious and totally appealing. She grew to a teen on that show and had a boyfriend played by a teen Johnny Galecki, who now plays Leonard on the BBT.

All news to me! It might have been a good show if I wasn't so turned off by Rozanne Barr.

I was never a science fiction fan, perhaps because I was a REAL science person (teacher). Still, I appreciate the humor on BBT. I didn't know Will's other character. Did you read my reply to Kristi below?

Just remembered a 70s or 80s series I wouldn't mind seeing some of -- that one about the newspaper reporters.. Lou Grant show, I guess. No wonder I mix it up with Mary Tyler Moore.

My first reply went "up top". Ed Asner (Lou Grant) had a more serious weekly show after MTM.

Big Bang Theory is also my favorite. It's funny (am a Star Trek nut also) that Wil Wheaton, such a nice, innocent boy on Star Trek the next Generation, plays a villain on Big Bang. He's gotten really good at villainy. Cool about Christina Applegate mom!

Should add I love The Big Bang Theory.

A lot of the shows you mention I considered then and now geared to teen taste. Even when I was a teen, I was turned off by teen shows. I loved Roseanne, the diaglogue was exceptional, the situations bordering on the real and still funny and I loved the way she put her kids into perspective. You have to be unthreatened by a gross personality to get to the meat of that show.I Love Lucy was a paean to male chauvinism and I can't watch it now without getting a bad stomach. The cute, ditsy wife with the all-knowing patronizing husband. Oh vomit. I liked Lucy in her B movie roles before she became a comedy icon. You forgot The Honeymooners.

Yes! The Honeymooners! Short, but memorable run. And, of course, you're right about the chauvinistic shows--no matter which side you're on! Somebody told me that the "Leslie Winkle" character on BBT was a daughter on Rozanne. True?

I normally do not watch sitcoms anymore. they all seem the same to me. But I am addicted to 2 Broke Girls. I mostly watch CSI type shows and Dexter is my fav show.

I haven't given 2 Broke Girls a chance. And I don't do the crime busters shows. Thanks for "tuning in".

Why was Roseanne funny. Yuk!

Ms. Barr still grosses me out. Same with the little twerp on Rules of Engagement (never watch). And Adam Sandler (movies). Double yuck.

We liked many of the same ones, but I sort of ran out of interest in first run sit-coms after Seinfield, which I really enjoyed. Sometimes the sit-com didn't catch my interest in the beginning, but I discovered them in reruns at odd hours. Loved Cheers and Frasier, too.

I missed the first year's episodes of Cosby, Home Imp., BB, etc., not realizing why they were so popular. So reruns were good. Plus, sometimes I'm gone on a trip and miss a show or two, so I'll flip on a BB rerun to see if I've seen it or not.

I remember all those shows. Does that mean I watch too much TV? I know I do. I like Big Bang, Met your Mother, Office, Parks and Rec, and Community now. I am debating about 2 Broke Girls. It is a little risque for its time slot.

2 Broke Girls and Mike and Molly don't do anything for me. Once was enough. "Twitchie" (to each).

I avoid anything with a laugh track, so no Big Bang for me. Based on that, I started watching The Bernie Mack Show and Malcolm in the Middle back in their day, and enjoyed them a lot.

I think BB is done in front of a live audience. But in general, I agree--no laugh tracks, although I don't really notice them.

I don't watch sitcoms anymore, but I used to love them when I was younger. I tried a few times to watch Big Bang, but I just can't get into it. I loved Friends, Three's Company, Who's the Boss and a few others I can't remember. Other were too stupid, Home Improvement, Married with Children, Rosanne (barf).

I forgot Three's Company. I only watched it for Suzanne Sommers.

I was never much of a sit-com fan--also agree about 30 rock and the office--tried to watch both a couple of times and gave up.
comment by greatmartin on Dec 2, 2011 7:55 AM ()
Well why watch any of these sit coms when your whole life is one big one!

How cool that you know Christina Applegates mom! I love Big Bang now as well - it's a catchy little show! I love All in the Family. I went to the American History museum to see Archie's chair. Pretty cool! I hated The Office at first, but then hubby got me into it... Nice list!
comment by kristilyn3 on Dec 2, 2011 6:36 AM ()
And as an update: I felt the urge to try to contact Christina's mom, Nancy. Wrote her an email with news of my family. And guess what? She wrote back!!! She talked of memories and of her family, etc. How neat is that?!
