Simple Life

As the old song goes, give me the simple life. But for a reason.

Let's face it. I'm "challenged" when it comes to mechanical, electrical, construction, or anything that's hands on.

You all know I don't own a cell phone or ipad or anything else that most people carry around with them. It's more than "living the simple life" or not wanting to deal with them. It's that I'm scared. Scared? Yes. At this point I feel stupid that I don't know anything about how they work. I'm ignorant (and not particularly proud of it).

The same goes with motorcycles or semi trucks or boats. I've never driven one--don't know how, don't want to know how.
I've never run a weed eater (I hand clip). I hoe garden weeds, not rototill (although I own a tiller). I split wood by muscle, not machine.

While I drive a small truck, I don't drive a golf cart.(I have driven a tractor on several occasions.) I probably wouldn't have a computer if it weren't for my ex-wife.

I don't own, nor have ever shot, a hand gun, rifle or shotgun. Power tools, like a table saw? No way. Whatever runs on its own power--gas or electricity--I'm avoiding. Chain saws and lawn mowers are exceptions. Once I get used to the "unknown", I'm okay. I'm just too intimidated to try something new.

True, I'm embarrassed to admit I'm a stone age guy. I could write my own version of a "diary of a wimpy old kid", not something I'm proud to admit.

Because you like lonely roads and rural adventures, a cell phone is not a burden but a life-saving device. Not wanting to learn may make you more vulnerable. When the first car came along, many said these new fangled contraptions weren't for them. And, "We don't need a phone we can holler."

On another issue, Lehman's catalogue that I get, is a font of old-fashioned things few make any more -- camping equipment and wood stoves and other stuff that might interest you. If you already know about it, you will know what I mean. Elsewise, if you'd like to take a look, call 800-877-5346 and they'll send you a copy. Be well. T.

Did you not ask for help on this?
comment by fredo on Aug 24, 2012 2:12 PM ()
If I did, it wasn't my purpose. No big deal.

My kids dragged me kicking and screaming into the 21st century. They only want to text; no phone calls. I like to hear voices, but I text now.

While driving like everybody else? I bet not. I barely know what texting is.

I know you mean that in a good way. However......

Not stone age. Simply analog.

Good point.

I love that perspective!

Well, all I can say is thank goodness for your ex-wife.

Sometimes I wonder. (regarding having a computer. I don't wonder about having an ex-wife!)

well ,well, well, give me the simple life. Not sure what you are trying to say.Are you looking for help?Cell phone,I pad are the most simple things to use.
You are an intelligent man and would not have any problems in using these.
All you need is a simple cell phone. You do not need any of the fancy one.
Consumer Cellular offer many phones for the seniors and they will help you.
I have this and we have unlimited phone call for 20 bucks a month.
Or you can get one less than this for ten dollars a month.
check it out.Google Consumer Cellular and read what they have to offer.
This is recommended by the AARP people. The people at the telephone place will walk you through with no charge. If you want a different phone they have smart phone that you can use and text etc. With a very low payment. If I had good hearing I would consider this.
You may have a simple life and that is not bad,but do have a couple of things there.
Cell phone or Ipad.Your choice. You can do it my man.Try it and you will liked it.
Your children can help you.Give me the simple life is your theme there.Wimpy kid well that is up to you.I had this on my blog.Diary of an old Wimpy Man.

I forgot your "wimpy" post. I'll look it up. Everybody keeps telling me how to, or what to, do. Thanks, but no thanks. It's my life, my decisions, my choices. Actually, I'm waiting for one of my kids to buy me a cell phone!

Why not be proud? You essentially are saying that you do things the hard way.

Hadn't thought of it thataway. If I had an ice cream maker, I'd be hand cranking it! That's good for me, right?

I own a few gadgets but am not having a lot of luck learning some of the new PC programs. For instance, my boss wants me to covert our newsletter to a digital edition that can be read on an iPad. (Not a PDF) I have not been able to figure out how to do that in the year since I got the program- so while it is a different level, I understand feeling challenged, anxious and lost.

I guess it's all a matter of degree. On a scale of 1 to 10, I'm a 2--and plan to stay there.

You would not have a huge learning curve with one of the more basic cell phones. Even though most phones offer internet connections (for a fee) and apps and texting -- you don't have to use any of these features. You don't have to program nos. I don't. I just punch in by memory the numbers I call often. It's useful when you travel and can be very convenient if your car breaks down on a lonely road. So if you are worried about going techie, go the simplest way and get someone to help you at the beginning. Surely an s.i.l. or daughter could give you a hand when you are starting up? Be well.

The point is: I DON'T WANT TO LEARN!
