Cantaloupes

Good Sunday morning!
I was watching the evening national news last night and heard Indiana mentioned three times!
One report was about salmonella infected cantaloupes from southern Ind. Many sickened, two deaths.
Another item was about a town "rediscovered" when a reservoir dried up. All I saw was concrete slabs. Big whoop.
And the last was about a lost Picasso in the basement of an Evansville museum. It's for sale if you're interested.

Back to the cantaloupes. I assisted my 8+ month pregnant daughter at the farmers market yest. They had no melons except watermelons. Other cantaloupe vendors sold very few because the morning's headline was about the outbreak, with warning "not to eat Indiana cantaloupes"!

With natural, sustainable vegetable farming, there's always something. For my kids, it was the drought and heat. Then, they got 3" of pounding rain in one day which damaged tomatoes, raspberries, green beans, etc. Squash beetles and other insects have been a problem (they don't spray). Oh yes, and their best field hand quit without so much as a "I quit". No warning, nothing. I'll be pressed into duty.
Still, we had a pretty decent sales day. I just hope my farm kids don't kill themselves from either overwork or stress.

farming is so hard. I hope your preggers daughter in law is doing ok with the stress! Very cool of you to be there to help in their time of need.

Thanks. I was somewhat nervous watching her "overwork". She kept assuring me she's was fine, but after one miscarriage, I was worried. I'll be helping with harvest Friday.

I don't need more reasons not to eat fresh fruit and veggies. I am so trying to lose weight!

Wonderful! I'm sure you can do it.

I had never heard of bleaching produce until I took a workshop at 4C Camp for Adults hosted by Cornell Cooperative Extension. We were making flavored vinegar and tea, and the woman was dipping the herbs into a diluted bleach solution, then rinsing. If it's good enough for CCE I guess it's good enough for me. But as you mention in a comment: it won't do any good if the contamination is in the fruit/herb.

I keep a "tub" of bleach water handy for all sorts of things, including dishes. It's been a long time since I've been sick.

My Dad hated 'cantaloupe.' He also discovered and never let us forget that cantaloupes are not grown in the US. Here they are Muskmelons. Cantaloupes are mostly European and a different item. I never heard the last of the lectures about 'cantaloupes' until he died, and I wish I could still hear them.

You're right--muskmelons it should be. Now my father loves them!

I have an acquaintance who started organic farming in NW IL a couple of years ago. He is facing some of the same conditions as your kids. Check out his website for interesting reading from the small farm perspective. It really takes tenacity and courage. www.hollomanfarm.com

I'll check them out.

While in Chicago, I enjoyed some wonderful cantaloupe from a north-central Illinois organic my brother purchased at the Evanston farmers' market. Glorious! A real treat. Glad you can help your daughter and son-in-law. Organic farming is so important, but it is never easy during the growing season.

Nothing like a good cantaloupe. Dad used to rate them on a scale of 1 to 10. I can't seem to grow them.

Was the melon from the Brockman Family Farm do you know? they come up to the Evanston market. Check out their website. Very interesting.

They should spray. (I know, they want to be natural farmers -- there's the rub). As for the rest, "I canteloupe without you."

Ha ha. They do use a bacterial spray which is deemed "organic". But it's expensive.

Sorry, about the kiddos with the problems there.I am sure that they will worked it out.
Yes,Cantaloupe is getting to be a big problems not only there but other place.
When I used to buy them I scrub the skin with soap and water and bleach.
I do not care where they are from but do not trust them.So buying this will be on hold for now.
I always wash my vegetables and fruit.Even if they are organic you never know who to trust.
Have a good Sunday.

I TRY to grow my own cantaloupe, but usually don't have much luck. Don't know why. I do have watermelon this year.

what I read was that the salmonella was in the flesh of the fruit too, not just the rind. got you both ways. be careful.
