Response to Hayduke's Dissing of Golf

Like Obama, I must not ignore the negative swipe at my SPORT by my friend Jim.
So Tiger is not an athlete? I concur with the NASCAR assessment, but not for golf. It takes great coordination to golf. To be able to precisely strike a little ball with the end of a club (even if it IS just sitting there)takes skill. It also requires thinking and imagination and extrapolation. Exercise and stamina, too, if one walks (6 miles/18 holes).

Golf builds character (look at me--I'm a character). It's a game--oops, a sport-- of honor and trust. Golf is for a lifetime. It's several hours outdoors. No TV or computer.

I know someone (Twain?) said golf was "a good hike ruined", but he never played. I have my complaints about golf, however. It takes up a lot of real estate; uses too much precious water; is expensive; is sun and skin intensive. But it does no real harm to the environment and doesn't kill wildlife as a rule (Yes, Tripp should be faulted).

For myself, golf on television is worse than baseball. So tedious and boring. I can understand why non golfers criticize the SPORT. The gentlemen I play with don't mess around. We just hit the ball, putt out, and move on. Conversation is lively, comaraderie is satisfying. For married guys, getting out of the wife's hair is a positive, and for single guys, it defeats reclusiveness.

There's more, but that's enough for now. Golf anyone?

Two of your commenters hit the nail on the head "ball too small, hole not big enough."

Life in New England is getting much better, my friend. There is light at the end of winter's long, cold tunnel now. High's predicted in the 50's today.
What's weather like on the plains now? Friends of mine in Warsaw tell me things are starting to thaw out, but not dry out.
Thanks for the little bit of fun that we had with the golf issue! ( I trust you know that most of it was tongue-in-cheek.)

Golf is a skill, and a great hobby, not a sport. Just like playing cards and knitting.
Hobbie is right, I can't play it to save my life.
Some of best friends are avid golfers, but we all have our little flaws and foibles that should be overlooked, right?
I suppose Tiger is an athlete. Does he do something besides play golf?

My better h alf loves golf but doesn't play often. My son keeps begging him to move to OKCY so they can play golf at TAFB. It would be nice to live close enough to the base to get a lot of use out of the amenities.

Speaking of Nascar, did you know that duplicate Bridge was an exhibition event at the 2004 Olympics? Soon to be a sport I suppose, although it would have to attract a younger group of players.
BTW, I disagree with your statement that Nascar isn't a sport, and I'm not even a fan. However, that's a discussion for another time and place.

A teacher, an accountant & a lawyer are playing golf. The threesome ahead of them is incredibly slow and they complain to the course supt. "Be patient with them," the supt. says. "Those are the three firemen that were blinded while saving our clubhouse from fire last year. We gave them each a life time pass to play on our course." Says the lawyer: "Why can't you just let 'em play at night?"

1. Totally agree.
2. Tiger is one of the best athletes alive.
3. Those who diss golf can't play it.
4. It's OK that they don't like it. That means we won't have to stand and wait for them to speed up on the tees!
