The other day, my daughter asked me to do my "Chester Honeyhugger" impersonation. For you "younguns", that was one of Red Skelton's characters. I was surprised she remembered ol' Chester. She recalled several others I did.
When I was a kid--and later a parent--I had quite a bag of characters. I think my first was from Jonathon Winters--Maud Frickert, for example. I tried duplicating some of his comedic routines.
I loved Ernie Kovacs, "Percy Dovetonsils" being one of my favorites. I was a great "Gabby Hayes". Paul Lynde: "You think it's easy?"
You get the idea. I got a kick out of imitating TV characters, Gomer and Goober (from Andy Griffith), "The Poor Soul" (Jackie Gleason), many others. My kids loved them. Of course they didn't know who the originals were, but never mind. They laughed.
Now it's time to re-introduce them to a new generation--my grandkids!
