Poxed and Scurvied

That's the title of the book I'm now reading (by Kevin Brown). It's actually rather depressing, certainly sad, since it's about the old days of sickness and health at sea.

Smallpox, syphilis, malnutrition, and scurvy are among some of the topics. Amazingly (to me), it took "forever" to discover the cause of scurvy.

They blamed the disease on bad sea air (duh--worse than London air?), dirty clothes, and everything other than diet! Even when someone discovered the cause (in 1747), it took over 50 years before people were convinced. Even then, they thought it was simply a matter of taking two tablespoons of lemon juice per day.

Hundreds of thousands of seafarers died of one thing or another, not to mention slaves and Native Americans exposed to "white man's diseases".

On a more pleasant note, not much going on in my little world. I helped my kids harvest yest. Got enough "bad" strawberries to make a shortcake last night. Yum.
They can't seem to find good help. Their 3 "Mexicans" all quit with no reason. Emily went on Craigs List to find one guy. Nobody wants to work anymore, especially if it's hard work (and hot).

I've already been up and out for a 6 mile walk to beat the heat. Supposed to be over 100 heat index for race day tomorrow. I've been once to the race--50 years ago! That was enough for me. I don't even listen to it anymore (we're blacked out, TV wise).

We have a "no burn" edict for the county. It's bone dry--rare for this time of year. My grass is brown, garden pathetic. Poor Nate and Emily and their vegetables, despite irrigation. Corn, sweet potatoes, etc. all shriveled up. No rain in sight.

Have a good Memorial Day weekend.

I was talking to a farmer at the Farmers' Market this week, and he said it's the first time he's had to do such extensive drip tape irrigation at this time of year. He's moving his tape every two hours round the clock to cover his entire large farm. He looked exhausted. The seeds/seedlings need rain badly. But he had wonderful hydroponic greens, too, which I was glad to buy.

Praying for rain!

Nate does drip irrigation, too. What a hassle. Saved his strawberries, however. Emily said they had a great market day yest. Whew!

Boots, no, but I know Henry from visiting the Evanston Farmers' Market with my brother, who is one of Henry's regular customers. I also get Henry's great e-mails, usually before I go to my farmers' market in NW Ohio, and it tells me what I should be looking for and might find here, if I'm lucky. So I was surprised to find a local NW Ohio farmer having to do the same drip line thing. Worrisome really, because the seeds are just getting started. I really do hope rain comes and in the right amounts for all our farmers!

Is your farmer Henry from Central Illinois? He had to do the drip line moving also.

Around here we have good luck finding workers outside of Home Depot or Lowes. Hey, at least they WANT to work :O Good

Sorry about the weather and particularly for Nate and Emily since it's their livelihood. What is race day? Horses, greyhounds? Insofar as medical discoveries, hindsight is so helpful in knowing we could have done it sooner. Sir Isaac Newton said, "If I have been able to see further than others, it is because I have stood on the shoulders of giants." He attributed much of his remarkable success to work done by others.

Indianapolis 500: "The greatest spectacle in racing" (Ha). Newton was into alchemy in his later years. Dwarf shoulders.

so sorry to hear this. The weather lately has been so weird lately.
We had our drought and then the rain came.Off and on showers in the last couple of weeks.
You have the drought and this time of the year we had to see if the frost is over with us here in New England.I remember frost on Memorial Day Weekend.

I'm afraid my raspberries are worthless this year. I've already heard the blueberry crop was ruined by late freeze.

Being a farmer is hard on soooo many levels. I hope the rain comes soon and their crops survive.
Craigslist is not always the best way to find people, sadly. Have they tried career builder or monster.com? Or maybe even the local paper, I think they can do online ads.
