Use it or Lose It

Great day here in Indiana. It's Aldi Day! And library day. And visit with Father day. That's this morning. Golf in PM.

My hip's been bothering me lately, making it difficult to jog and swing a golf club. Ibuprofen helps, but the pain is still there.

I should probably take it easy and do nothing to aggrevate it. But over the years, with a bad back, I've concluded that rest seldom does any good. It's like a cold--it runs its course no matter what you do.

Now if I positively can't do my normal things, I'm forced to back off. Otherwise, I continue on. I have the philosophy of "use it or lose it".

That includes just about everything you can think of in the human body. One doesn't need a doctor or health instructor to tell us we need to use our muscles and bones continually, or we'll lose mass and density, and, consequently, strength.

Yet, how many people, young and old alike, lift weights or walk (or jog)? I'm guessing one in ten golfers walk--nine take a cart. Maybe one in twenty! Even kids.

The same can be said of the brain. Use it or lose it. Read, work puzzles, write, think. The thought of becoming a human "vegetable", both physically and mentally, is abhorant to me.

Yes, I'm driven to avoid infirmaties--at least those I have some say over. There's not much I can do about arthritis, but I battle through the pain, refusing to use it as an excuse for not exercising. Fortunately, I enjoy (for some unknown reason) getting out and about. It may be the endorphins. It may also simply be that I love life and living!

I agree with not letting pain stop you. But you also have to be careful that it isn't a real injury that needs rest to repair it.

I once tried to jog for nearly 6 months on a torn knee miniscus before accepting my fate (surgery). So, you're correct. I'm still missing your posts, by the way.

Me being macho are you serious.

Not you--my father (acting macho).

No, sadly, I still eat like I am representing the entire country of China...

Like I said before,I am always in pain and continued my game.
While playing tennis the pain goes away and then comes back to haunt you.
Never let this stop you unless you are in real pain and cannot tolerated.
I very seldom use any kind of pain pill.As long that I can handled it and the better that its works for me.Pain is life.Use it or lose it that is the statement that you make.
If I cannot walk or play anymore well then back to reading and keep the mind sharp.
Enjoy the rest of the day.

You sound like my father. He refused to listen to us kids about taking a pain reliever for his hip ache (all winter). But when the doctor said "pop pills", he finally did. Miraculously, his pain vanished! Sometimes, acting "macho" is being stubborn.

I've had back pain since for many years, mostly due to an accident when I was young (and careless). Doc told me once that I could spend the rest of my live in the library or learn to deal with it. I have arthritis now too, and repetitive activity, like splitting wood, and be the worst for that. But the trick is to *own* the pain, not to *fight* it. That really does make it just a fact of life.

Still, I "fight" it. I'm not letting it slow me down (too much). I split some wood just two days ago.

The philosophy works. Science backs it up. I share the same view. Love jogging!!

Good to hear from you. And glad to note you're still jogging. As they say, " You don't quit running because you get old. You get old because you quit running."

Exercise helps the spirit I think... I like my daily dog walks. I hope the pain subsides though --- Have a good day!

Plus, I do some of my best thinking while exercising. Are you losing weight?

I have worked through arthritic pain in my shoulder(s), hips, toes, fingers. Use a heat pack, use massage, and work the hip. Here are some full range of motion things you can do. Lie on floor, legs together. Bend knee, raise knee toward chest, hold (30 seconds is good), relax, repeat. Lie on floor, raise leg straight up, arc to the side slowly as far as you can go, return to floor, repeat. Slow is the key, full range is the key. Sit on edge of chair, place instep on floor, toes under, knee bent, lean back on chair, hold. If you try these, let me know if they help (they should).

Sounds like a plan. I'll begin this evening (in front of the TV).

I feel better when I do some sort of exercise. The endorphins kicking in definitely give me a better outlook mentally.

I'm exhausted at first. The pay-off comes later. Keep at it.

One of the recommended ways to stave off brain atrophy... learn another language. It puts the brain matter to work in wonderful connective ways and has been proven to keep the organ sharp.

I've lost my high school French. It would be good to relearn it. Or Spanish. Alas, I don't see the practicality of it. I'd rather learn "how to paint", like you.
