Regarding Opinions

We all have opinions. It's what makes the world go 'round. We're all experts--know-it-alls. You name the subject, there's an opinion. We all know what we're talking about.

This isn't bad (having opinions), it's just a fact. But quite frankly, I'm tired of other people's opinions, whether I agree with them or not. I suppose everything we say is an opinion ("Nice weather we're having"). But I'm referring to more controversial topics, like whether it's proper to build a mosque near the World Trade Center site.

My newspaper has a weekly "opinion" page, and this was the subject. I was disgusted at some of the responses. I can't imagine arguing with these people.

Of course, anybody with an opinion opposite of yours thinks you're an idiot. I confess to that thought process. Of course, I'm usually right (roll eyes). But to think and say Pres. Obama is a Muslim, that's just plain wrong (and stupid).

My golfing buddies freely express their opinions. I just listen and keep mine to myself. What good does it do to argue?

Enemies are made voicing opinions. Blogging often brings out the dark side of us with our varied expressions. I'm guilty as charged. Writing about what bugs you, however, beats road rage. I need to lighten up, get rid of all hostility, shrug it off, etc.

Of course, if we all "go with the flow", we could/would be like Nazi Germany. Antithesis is required at times. Just watch your backside.
(Does any of this make sense?!)

Even here the mosque is a topic, cause of Geert Wilders going to the USA and make a shame of my country explaining why such a building should be forbidden....:(

Good to hear from you Robin. I guess I don't know about the person you mentioned. No big deal for me.

YES, it's the Kenny Rogers Philosophy: – The Gambler
You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away and know when to run
You never count your money when you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealing's done

Correct. Notice my comment to Jondude below.

Whoa! An opinion that's "accurate". That rarely happens to me. Thanks.

Oh I do not like the Mosque Idea at all...

I'm surprised at your position. I thought it would be "whatever". And don't worry. I won't start calling you "Polly"! (maybe Anna)
reply by solitaire on Aug 23, 2010 2:42 PM ()
make a lot of sense to me.I stay out of this type of conversation.
Unless someone ask me what I think.Opinion we all have. But the art of this word is how we used it.They can build anything that they want.Let them fight it over with,as I sit back and chuckle.Bunch of idiots.
Wonder why the Catholic church did not get involve?oh!they have not money.
You know where the money went. How about a baseball stadium there?
comment by fredo on Aug 22, 2010 1:02 PM ()
Well, there ARE bigger issues to debate. I think Obama should have kept his opinion to himself. He only fueled the fire.
reply by solitaire on Aug 23, 2010 2:39 PM ()
Since I believe the mosque/club should be elsewhere, I will give my reason. It's an issue of manners and grace. Surely we can all agree that more of that and less of "I'll take what's mine no matter how offensive I am" is a step toward a nicer world. The killer/rapist doesn't send his mother to the funeral of his victim. It's bad taste.
comment by tealstar on Aug 22, 2010 11:54 AM ()
Believe it or not, I understand both sides of the issue. Same with abortion and gun control. That makes me a straddler--or maybe a good debater that can defend either position.

I wholeheartedly concur!

The dumbing down of America is in part due to the news media and the tv that entertains and does not instruct. In a recent poll almost half of the
people believe President Obama is a Muslim and that he was not born in the
United States. There are people who believe the holocaust never happened.
My mother said to never discuss politics or religion and I see what she
meant but I think we can agree to disagree.

That fact alone explains why "we" continue to support the Sarah Palins and Newt Gingrichs of the world. We're just a bunch of ignorant idiotic dunderheads (present company excluded).

And is that your opinion????

Someone keeps replying to my readers. I have no opinion. Head in sand.

haven't read this and I am still not past pollyanna.

Oh snap, I was going to tell you I agree with Randy on the Pollyanna thing in the sense of having a bright outlook on life, and my comment to Randy got put in your spot. When you started reading it you probably wondered why is Laura ragging at me when it's Randy who brought it up?
reply by troutbend on Aug 22, 2010 11:50 AM ()
I haven't read past the headlines on that mosque thing, but I have formed my opinion based not on any arguments pro or con, just my gut instinct. This is probably how a lot of opinions get formed, along the lines of don't confuse me with facts I know what I think is right.
reply by troutbend on Aug 22, 2010 11:48 AM ()
Wouldn't it be nice if everyone could use facts and reason to discuss things? Unfortunately, opinion MUST figure into many conversations, because most of us are uninformed or misinformed in many ways wether we admit it or not. I have some very strong opinions about a lot of things. I try to keep quite about the ones for which I have little information to support. Interesting post.
PS: I refrained from commenting on "How Big Is God? because my opinion and yours are pretty much diametrically opposed.
comment by jerms on Aug 22, 2010 7:27 AM ()
It's interesting you use the terms "facts and reason" in your reply, since that's the basis for being the nonbeliever that I am. And you did "good" by refraining from commenting on my "blasphemous" post you alluded to! For the record, one of my best friends is a golfing buddy minister! Or minister golfing buddy, whatever. We express our opinions in a fun and accepting way. I would hope the same applies to you and me.
reply by solitaire on Aug 23, 2010 2:27 PM ()
Yes, it does make sense. Whats more, it is so true (no, I am not agreeing because I am being 'polite', I do agree wholeheartedly)
My husband & I had a similar discussion about this recently, concerning him and other members of his 'boat club'. I gave him 'my' opinion on the matter in question (i.e. how I would deal with the issue - which was speaking my mind and with the attitude of 'if the cap fits, wear it'). If a person gives you his opinion on 'whatever' & you cannot express your own without being chastised about it, then I think it is wrong.
I find it difficult to hold lengthy discussions any more even though I still love the art of rhetoric - I have another blog site which I keep 'private', so I am able to 'rant & rave' to my hearts delight, without offending anyone (not even my 'nearest & dearest know of the existence of it)
Thumbs up, for personal opinion (provided there is an avenue for a person to express his or her opinion back).
A very thought provoking article Randy

Thank you "Breezy" (my new nickname for you). Ironically, I was expressing my opinion about opinions! Most people don't know when to keep opinions to themselves. That's a lesson I've learned for my own sake.
reply by solitaire on Aug 23, 2010 2:20 PM ()
It does. The wise learn quickly to keep their mouths shut, except to smile and eat. But when the "others" step on their toes, the mouths must open and cry out!
