Indiana is one of the best states in the union.....at polluting!
We're small, but high ranking in the CO2 emissions from electricity generation--the third leading source of greenhouse gas emissions in the country. We're 3rd in generating that power by burning coal, and we're 2nd in the amount of coal burned annually (95% of our electricity comes from coal). 14th most populated state, but #1 in CO2 emissions per person. Hurray!
That's not all: We're 4th in spewing nitrogen oxides into the air causing acid rain. We're #3 in sulfur dioxides and 4th in toxic mercury emissions. Time to celebrate!
And it's not just the air we're polluting. We rank 5th in the number of hog farms and 4th in chickens raised for eggs, most of which are CAFOs (confined operations). Groundwater and runoff, here comes the s**t!
I won't detail who's doing what, but of the state's top ten CO2 emitters, 10 (100%) are energy-from-coal producers. And except for one proposed coal gasification power plant, nothing is being done to correct the status quo.
Yes, there's more than corn in Indiana. We're #1, we're #1, we're #1 ---at polluting. I'm one proud Hoosier.
polluting; ours is EVERYTHING else. The fattest, the poorest, the
lowest salaries--yep, Mississippi is #1 in every way.
