One Proud Hoosier!

Indiana is one of the best states in the union.....at polluting!
We're small, but high ranking in the CO2 emissions from electricity generation--the third leading source of greenhouse gas emissions in the country. We're 3rd in generating that power by burning coal, and we're 2nd in the amount of coal burned annually (95% of our electricity comes from coal). 14th most populated state, but #1 in CO2 emissions per person. Hurray!

That's not all: We're 4th in spewing nitrogen oxides into the air causing acid rain. We're #3 in sulfur dioxides and 4th in toxic mercury emissions. Time to celebrate!

And it's not just the air we're polluting. We rank 5th in the number of hog farms and 4th in chickens raised for eggs, most of which are CAFOs (confined operations). Groundwater and runoff, here comes the s**t!

I won't detail who's doing what, but of the state's top ten CO2 emitters, 10 (100%) are energy-from-coal producers. And except for one proposed coal gasification power plant, nothing is being done to correct the status quo.

Yes, there's more than corn in Indiana. We're #1, we're #1, we're #1 ---at polluting. I'm one proud Hoosier.

Every state must be on the #1 lists for something--yours is
polluting; ours is EVERYTHING else. The fattest, the poorest, the
lowest salaries--yep, Mississippi is #1 in every way.

Oh, those terrible hog farms. I live in terror that someone would try to put one in near us.

Well, we do have to raise hogs and chickens somewhere? What would be your solution to all these problems?

I better check to see where California is on the list... Maybe not that bad because we're taxed to death trying to keep pollution under control. Don't know (don't think) we're succeeding, though!

The Gallager plant down here in New Albany IN is one of the worst polluters in the nation. Yea for us.!!!!

You wanna talk environmental time bomb? Check out the stats on Mexico City and air pollution!!!! Anacephalic babies are common now because of the maquiladora industry...but none of this matters because Jesus is comin' soon, right? My evangelical neighbors DENY global warming and categorize CO2 emissions as "junk science"; for them, fuel efficiency standards are, "government imposed birth control". Go figure!!!

Illinois is a coal state so I imagine it is right with there with Indiana! Southern Illinois is comprised mainly of wetlands and forests. The skies are clear in my neck of the woods! So you're knee deeep in chicken poop, hey!
