Par For The Course

News and Views

I'll begin with personal news.

My one and only son emailed me! He asked if I could help with a plane ticket home this summer (from CA). I'm helping his sister (CA, too), so why not? Moneybags here. We'll have a family mini-reunion, minus only one daughter.

My mystery bird has been identified--a house finch (and mate)! Bird book says they're found West and East, but not Midwest. They are now! Building a nest in the neck curve of my downspout. Great!

I finally broke 80 on my new golf course (79). But I've only been able to play 4 times. It's about 5 strokes more difficult than my previous "home" course. But I like it better. If you remember, I switched courses due to a falling out with some members and former friends. No regrets.

I planted 6 more blueberry plants yesterday--little stubby things. I had bought (on line) two sets of "2 for $10", but they packed 3 plants in each sack. Some day, I'm going to have lots of blueberries! 12 plants in all, if they survive.
(I see a rabbit in the garden right now--GIT!)

Happy anniversary yest. to 50 years in space, when Alan Shepard flew. I was a Senior in high school. Now I'm just a Senior. It can't be.

Kentucky Derby is tomorrow. I don't follow horse racing, but I'm putting my money on "Pants on Fire". Love that name!

And hurray, hurray, The Donald is withdrawing from driving the pace car at the Indy 500! "Too busy", he says. Yeah, sure. He's still smarting over the shellacking he took at the Correspondants Dinner. He had no business driving anyway.

I see Gen Motors made a ton of money last quarter. To the naysayers of the govt. bailout, I say "na na nee na na".

Don't you just love our President?! He was so low-keyed at "Ground Zero" yesterday, as he talked individually to affected people. He's visiting Indiana today to hype his green energy policies. Possible Republican presidential candidate, Indiana's own governor, Mitch Daniels, will greet him at the airport. And have you noticed how many news commentators have accidentally misspoken Obama's name, saying "Osama"? Easy mistake, but embarrassing.

And speaking of energy, our state and local gas prices are staggeringly high. Like $4.25 a gal. But there appears to be hope, as the price of a barrel of oil dropped under $100 yest.
It's pretty sad when I have to think twice about driving the 60 miles round trip to visit my daughter and grandson (Sun). That's $12 worth of gas. Oh well, as I said before, "moneybags".

Have a great Friday and weekend!

Sending happy glowing wishes to your blueberries! I'm waiting for local blueberries. There were some for sale at the supermarket — really expensive, but they came from Peru!! I don't pay for jet fuel with my blueberries....

Obama rocks!

I watered my new blueberry plants last evening and could see some green shoots coming out of what appeared to be a dead stem (that's what they sent me)! They're alive! Now all I need is patience--and hope that I live long enough to see the end results.

I appreciate the advice. Hugs all around! And no negative "words of wisdom" from his old man.

AWESOME that your son contacted you... just as you hoped for hey?
comment by kristilyn3 on May 7, 2011 9:07 AM ()
I suppose the fact that he did write me trumps the reason--asking for money. At least, he wants to come home! That's a good sign.

But I don't drink!

Thanks for dropping by, if even for a short visit. I've been too busy (or exhausted) to find time to jog.

You keep shooting a golf score like that and we will see you on the professional tour, maybe the Masters! How wonderful for you that your son wants to come for a visit. Don't worry about the money, you can always print some more. My tomato plants are looking strong.
comment by gapeach on May 6, 2011 3:46 PM ()
Most people would be proud of shooting a 79, but not me. My game has deteriorated quite a bit as I age. That score is 7 over par, whereas I used to shoot par. No Masters, I'm afraid. I'm jealous of your tomatoes!

Speaking of Golf, did you ever watch "Dorf on Golf" with Tim Conway? It is hilarious, and about all I know on the subject.
comment by dragonflyby on May 6, 2011 9:34 AM ()
Although Tim is a very funny man, no. And I don't aim to. I bet he goes "overboard" with silliness. Not my style.

I'm going to be swinging a mushroom stick today! We found two yest. while playing golf. This is a great year for them. And yes, I'm hoping to spend some quality time with my son. I'm going to act like I see him all the time--low key attitude.

Talk about people writing l-o-o-o-o-o-ng blogs!! But that's okay--I enjoyed reading it
comment by greatmartin on May 6, 2011 7:31 AM ()
My blogs are like a fine wine--you just can't get enough!

Congratulations to you on the golf score. You would snicker to see my
little raised bed but I have squash up and my early girl is about 6 inches
tall and has taken it into her head to bloom.
comment by elderjane on May 6, 2011 6:30 AM ()
No snickers. Envy! Zero tomatoes, zero squash (except unwanted volunteers). And yours is even blooming already? Amazing.
reply by solitaire on May 7, 2011 4:40 AM ()
79?! WOW.
comment by jondude on May 6, 2011 5:37 AM ()
I'm hoping to get down towards par. As it was, I shot a 42-37, one over back side. Still early, and I'm not familiar with the course yet.
