The End is Near!

True, 10 more days until the election is over. But that's not what my article is about.
I'm talking garden. We had our first frost the other night. That did in the tomatoes. But I covered some plants, so I'll continue to have some for awhile.
My potatoes--both regular and sweet--are out of the ground. A couple of sweets were the size of footballs! I don't like them that large. Need to invite all my mybloggers friends to help eat them.
I'm still harvesting several frost-hardy veggies: parsnips and carrots, peas, cauliflower, broccoli, kale, chard, and Brussel sprouts. I made "freezer" slaw with a head of cabbage yesterday. My 15 cubic foot freezer can hold no more food. I'm going to have to dehydrate my oncoming pear crop. In fact, I'm planning to bake a pear upside-down cake later today. Never tried that before.

Still splitting and stacking firewood. It's been cold enough to begin heating the house with it. Drying out my black walnuts on top of the wood burner. Hickory nuts are pretty wormy this year.
Autumn colors are terrible this year--worst in my memory. My trees are still mostly green. Usually by now, the leaves are falling. Blame it on global warming or George Bush! Enjoy your weekend, wherever you may be.

Sweet potato pie? I've never tried it, but it sounds interesting.

I came by to see what is going on at your place. I love to hear about your gardening. I miss gardening, but with my back... it is just out-of-the-question. Your life right now reminds me of my life on the Walnut farm in California. I grew a huge garden, canned fruit and jams, dried fruit, and gathered walnuts and almonds. I always loved walnut harvest. The whole family worked together to bring in the 40 acres of walnuts. Those were good times.Enjoy your pear upside down cake.

I had to put my tomatoes in a brown paper bag to ripen. I dug up some Cannas and left others in the ground.

Lots of work and so rewarding. Good for you.

Sounds like one of your potatoes will feed a family of four. Bet you only need one to make a sweet potato casserole.! Now, that would make a great photo to post.

Frost has come late this year, and it was a good season for tomatoes in my friends' garden so I have enjoyed that bounty. I might plant a tomato plant in a container on the patio next year and we'll find out if deer and ground squirrels like to eat tomato plants.

I envy you your vegetable garden. I had bad luck with one tomato plant in a container. Back to the market. We get frosts here, too. It's a problem for the growers. Sometimes I'll go walking in shorts and ear-muffs (ears are my weak spot -- I think my eardrum is punctured). Enjoy your upside down cake. Yum.

The end is "here" for mine - I still had some nice green tomatoes too when the frost hit...
Ah well, Guess it's time to start singing Christmas carols eh?

Have a wonderful weekend!
